I keep hearing how awful IE is but I've had very few problems with mine (and I surf the Net a lot).

BTW, I've never had pop-ups on this site. Perhaps it's because I use Ad-Aware to clean up my disk often and I update IE pretty frequently.

Let me clarify - it wasn't a pop-up on this site. I run Zone Alarm as a software firewall. It was Zone Alarm that popped open a warning window here saying that IE was trying to send my eBay password to the S2K IP address. So far, this is the only web site where Zone Alarm has popped open that warning, but I generally don't use my wife's laptop. We're on a network, behind a NAT firewall and Zone Alarm, and we both use Norton Antivirus 2003 with twice-weekly updates.

So do any of you use Zone Alarm and IE here?

Ebay has a weakness whereby passwords are sent to the website in clear-text, as opposed to being encrypted by 128-bit SSL (such as your online banking passwords would be). As such, anyone on the network running a Network Sniffer could easily gain your password.

This is a big weakness in eBay and I don't know why it hasn't been addressed. Whenever you log in to eBay, use the "Secure Sign In (SSL)" link at the bottom instead of the regular login.

With that said, ZoneAlarm may have been trying to warn you that the password was not being encrypted. Unfortunately, I am not sure why it would be sending the password to Storm2k instead of ebay.

What were you doing when you received that message? Logging into Storm2K by any chance???

I dont use Zone Alarm but have EZ Trust provided by Road Runner. Its practically a clone of ZA. When I did have ZA it would lock my pc up and disconnect me from the internet so I went back to EZ. The only warnings I ever get are when someone does a port scan. I use IE but dont get pop ups.

As for Norton AV, i'll never use it again. The darling daughter (bless her pea pickin heart) downloaded a virus once that completely shut down the pc. After the idiot techies @ compusa helped me to reformat my hard drive incorrectly (had windows on the pc twice) and another week of me trying to fix it while the techs at work yelled at me to bring it in I finally took the pc to work and let the tech who does Secret Service installations fix the computer. Long story longer, Norton had been infected which kept running the virus or trojan or whatever it was. He downloaded Avast AV which was the ONLY program to find the virus and I've not had a problem since.

I've never heard of Firefox, I'll have to read and find out what it is.

For wxman57, the IP address traces back to Houston, TX ... and it's on an ev1.server.net

I have spybot but it still doesnt rid it. You have to go in the Registry key alot of times and remove the program. Example like "midaddle", "incredisearch" are both a pain to get out. I learned my lessons with spyware and viruses and stay away from stuff sites :( :( cause I found thats where the bulk of my spyware and 3 viruses came from. Plus my dad was mad. I IE, but like Firefox better also.

Same thing here. People hear about Firefox, download and install it and like the way it looks and what it does.

If having no problems with maintenance programs available for use... I see no use of changing for something I am not having problems with.

I don't understand why you would advise people to be careful about accessing Storm2k. It would appear that your wife's PC has a virus or has had her IE hijacked. I can guarantee you it's not coming from this site.

I use Mozilla -- free browser available online at the Mozilla site. No problems since I got it.

It was recommended to me by a European friend who does research on internet security. He said never ever us IE or Netscape because they are used so much that the bad guys target them for viruses, piracy, etc.

I would contact your service provider and tell them someone tried to hack your ebay password. there has to be a way to track down who tried that based on the IP assignment. Make sure you note the date and time this happened so you don't forget. Maybe they can take care of it or tell you who you can inform so they can take care of it.

Re: Something on S2K Forum Stealing eBay Passwords?

Soon as I logged in, Zone Alarm popped up a window saying that Internet Explorer was attempting to send the IP address 66.98.251.192 my eBay password. I clicked "Deny Access", of course.

While I don't think anyone at S2K may be doing this, could someone have planted something here that is attempting to get passwords from forum members? Better be careful and use a firewall when coming here.

What's very curious is that Zone Alarm would have no way of knowing the Ebay Password to even identify it as such. It may have reacted falsely to the cookie that S2K uses. That would at least explain why it had the S2K server address.

Well you know what, I am on Linux for the time being; using the Konqueror browser and I am getting almost constant alert boxes telling me about cookies trying to be submitted to my computer from this site. :?: It is really very annoying...

Cookies are a normal part of the board Joshua. They've been used here since day 1 of the board.
