I have never gotten a pop-up surfing Storm2K using IE. I usually only get one on some sites.

I don't mind immediately going to the x in the upper right-hand corner to cancel it. :)

Example like "midaddle", "incredisearch" are both a pain to get out. I learned my lessons with spyware and viruses and stay away from stuff sites :( :( cause I found thats where the bulk of my spyware and 3 viruses came from. Plus my dad was mad. I IE, but like Firefox better also.

I can't believe something else to worry about. I don't know much about computers so what am I to do. I have a laptop and my main computer and a router. Was told I don't need a firewall with the router. I use internet explorer and don't care if anyone gets into any of my password protected internet areas--except my bank account. Do I need to worry?

Also..... Not to be overally critical, but perhaps it being posted in the "Tests, Help, & Suggestions" or "Off Topic" would have been a better idea...

Good point, huricanwatcher. This is the one reason why those most of us feel we need to post
non-tropical weather and non-weather related issues in the Hurricane Hollow Tropical Weather forum.

I am late getting into this, but I'll add my 2 cents.

I'm running IE and zone alarm, and use spybot regularly, and occasionally ad aware to see if spybot missed anything. This computer gets a lot of use by the whole family. My wife goes for every special offer that's out there, and my kids go to all kinds of sites rife with advertising. SpyBot has an immunize feature to prevent spyware from even being downloaded. The most famous case of this is that The Weather Channel always tries to put spyware called "Avenue A" on your computer. Without fail, whenever I go to TWC, I get a notice saying that "spybot has blocked the download of avenue A"

I have never had a pop up at S2K.

My browsing experience with IE is satisfactory with the safegaurds I'm using. As long as I keep up with routine maintenance, this old 500 mhz computer is still pretty snappy for ordinary browsing. Of course the cable modem doesn't hurt. that's why I got zone alarm.

I use Norton Internet Security! Very high quality with my Internet Explorer browser. On each of our computers, my brother, my father and myself recieved a lot of annoying pop-ups and useless e-mails that were usually accompanied by a virus-ladden file or two. Installed Norton and it has worked almost flawlessly. Very few pop-ups (I mean VERY few), and e-mails are either blocked totally, or Norton lets you know via e-mail it killed a hazardous e-mail.

Last May I got the Sasser worm on my computer.

I was a real dummy, you know, the born under a rock yesterday type, running my comp with no firewall and no antivirus protection.

Well it took me 2 weeks to clean the Sasser out of my computer.

I learned my lesson real good.

I have XP, so I enabled the Internet Connection firewall that comes with XP, then I bought the professional version of ZoneAlarm 5.5. ZoneAlarm is a bi-directional firewall. Nothing gets in, and nothing gets out that you don't know about. I also have Ad Aware SE and AVG Antivirus 7.0. I have NO problems with viruses or spyware. Since I am a computer and weather and electronic storefront geek, I NEVER visit stuff sites and I have had few probs with spyware. After May and my run-in with Sasser, I tend not to like chat rooms either. I don't use Kazaa, Kazaa and other file-sharing sites like that have many spywares and ad wares bundled in with them and music file sharing is against the law anyway; people are getting sued everyday for sharing music files. I have downloaded many anti-spyware and anti-adware programs from the Net, many of them are free to use.

Viruses, worms, spyware and adware don't stand a chance in my computer, not anymore. I get one pop-up every two months or so, sometimes not even that many.

I learned the hard way and I learned my lesson real good.
