So they are going to retire Ivan the terrible??? He was one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever form in the Atlantic basin...He gave Mitch,Andrew,Hugo,David,...In a few other storms a run for there money. In got close to storms like Allen,Camille,Dog,1935...Ivan also tied with Allen in Isabel with having 3 times becoming cat5...The 6th lowest pressure ever in the Atlantic basin.

Ismael was used in the EPAC. It was retired in 1995. It hit the Baja Peninsula and northwest Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 80 mph.
Based on erratic information from satellite photos and offshore weather balloons, the Mexican National Meteorological Service said Ismael appeared to be moving WNW away from the coast. But Ismael was actually swinging NNE towards the Baja coast where many fishing boats and shrimp boats were at sea in the gulf of Baja.
The boats were taken by surprised and 32 sank. 100 people drowned and 150 other fishermen were stranded on sandbars. On land, Ismael dumped 8 inches of rain that killed 5 people.
In all, Ismael killed 105 people. The Mexican NMS was bitterly criticized for the inadequate warnings and updates on Hurricane Ismael.
Ismael was retired and was initially replaced by the Hispanic name "Israel". However, this drew the ire of the Jewish community.
Instead, Ismael was replaced by the name "Ivo".

Maybe with a name like a beautiful flower, it will just go out to sea and not hurt anyone!
Didn't work. Iris was used in the Atlantic until 2001. She was an itty bitty hurricane but still made landfall on Belize as a powerful Category 4, killing 28.
Iris was replaced by Ingrid.

Iris may have been retired, it was an intense storm that made landfall in Mexico.
Iris was retired, Tom .. Ingrid is the replacement name ...
additionally, Ike does replace Isidore, and Ida replaces Isabel ...
