Jailsick Jailbird Tries to Return to Prison
ROME, Italy (Reuters) - What's a jailsick jailbird who is under house arrest to do when he feels homesick for prison?
Go back to jail, or at least try his hardest.
A 34-year-old man on the island of Sardinia who was released from prison and put under house arrest felt uneasy without bars around him.
So, according to the Italian news agency Ansa, he "escaped" from house arrest in Sassari on Wednesday and knocked on the door of the city's San Sebastiano prison, where he had done time for vandalism.
When guards there refused to let him back in, he complained to police, who arrested him. A judge will decide the man's next address.

Car Thieves End Up Behind Bars... at the Zoo
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Two Brazilian car thieves started their life behind bars while still on the run when they chose a cage in a Rio de Janeiro zoo to hide from police, officials said on Monday.
A zoo keeper told Reuters the pair were found hiding in an enclosure where deer and tapir are kept after police chased the fugitives into the zoo on Sunday.
"Apparently police thought that the bandits were going to take the animals hostage, but, thank God, that did not happen. They just wanted to hide," the keeper said.

Student Collects Fake Parking Fines
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A fraternity member has been busted for apparently finding a unique way to supplement his college income — fake parking tickets.
Prosecutors said Anthony R. Gallagher, 23, allegedly earned hundreds of dollars by putting fake parking tickets on cars and having duped owners send him their payments.
Investigators became aware of the scam in March 2003 after a victim tried to mail in a payment for a ticket but had it returned as non-deliverable, a criminal complaint said.
Prosecutors said the tickets were the exact copy of a parking ticket Gallagher received in February of last year, even down to the citation number.
Investigators were able to trace the citation number to Gallagher, who admitted placing several of the tickets on vehicles parked near the Acacia fraternity, police said.
Prosecutors said Gallagher established a post office box to receive payments for the $40 tickets and had placed payments, amounting to hundreds of dollars, in a separate bank account.

Man Shows Up Drunk for His Hearing
READING, Pa. (AP) - A motorist's bail was revoked when police said he had the daring to show up drunk to his preliminary hearing on drunken driving charges.
Emerson Moore Jr., 46, of Caernarvon Township, was awaiting his hearing before Muhlenberg Township District Justice Dean R. Patton when Moore got into an argument with state police Trooper Roberto Soto, officials said.
Soto, who had arrested Moore in the drunken-driving case June 20, smelled alcohol on Moore's breath as the two stood in the hallway outside Patton's courtroom, officials said.
Moore, who had driven himself to court, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.10 percent, police said. The legal limit for driving in Pennsylvania is 0.08 percent.
Patton revoked Moore's bail and sent him to Berks County Prison on $2,500 bail. He also will be cited for public drunkenness, he said.
"You don't show up drunk for a preliminary hearing, especially when it's a drunk-driving case," Patton said. "I asked him what he was thinking and he said, 'You told me I could drink at home.'"

Man Pleads Guilty to Snatching Hairpiece
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A man was sentenced to probation Monday for snatching the hairpiece off the head of another man at a restaurant.
Paul J. Goudy, 25, of Lemoyne, pleaded guilty Monday to theft by unlawful taking. He was sentenced to 23 months' probation, fined $500 and ordered to write a letter of apology.
The victim, Edward Floyd, was sitting in the Fisaga restaurant in Harrisburg on Jan. 1 when Goudy ripped the hairpiece off his head, taking with it a gold chain that hung from his neck, according to court documents.
"Don't these guys have anything better to do than to rob and humiliate someone for absolutely no reason in the world? It's just outrageous," said Floyd, 60, of Harrisburg. "I'm a nice guy. I don't bother anybody."
Goudy said another man, Matthew G. Flinchbaugh, 26, of Wormleysburg, had offered him $100 to do it as a dare. Flinchbaugh is scheduled to be arraigned next month on charges of soliciting Goudy to steal the hairpiece.
Flinchbaugh's lawyer, William Fetterhoff, said the prank was "an exercise in very poor judgment."
"It's the sort of prank that when you're on the other end — as Mr. Floyd was — it's not funny at all," he said.
Flinchbaugh is expected to request entry into a first-time offender's program.
Floyd said he is examining the possibility of a lawsuit against Flinchbaugh, although he said he might drop the idea if Flinchbaugh apologizes.
"It has literally affected my entire life, and for what? What did I do?" Floyd said.

Thieves Rob Bus Full of Policemen
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Forty-six Brazilian policemen traveling to a sports competition were caught with their guard down this week when four Brazilian thieves robbed the bus carrying them to the event.
The bus with 46 unarmed policemen from northeastern Paraiba state was headed to the city of Salvador in Bahia when two cars with armed robbers forced them to stop on the country's main interstate highway on Tuesday.
"The robbers took their cameras, cellular phones, wallets and even the sports uniforms and sneakers," a police spokesman said.
The suspects, who escaped, apparently did not know the bus was full of police when they stopped it, he said.
"We are looking for them, but I cannot say there's any particular ardor here due to the fact that policemen have been robbed."

Serial flasher hangs up his camera
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Court TV) - An Ohio man is looking at 18 months in jail because of his unique brand of flash photography.
Stephen Linnen pleaded guilty to exposing himself to women and taking pictures of their startled expressions.
According to Assistant Prosecutor Christian Domis, the 34-year-old man began taking his candid shots in February 2002 in Columbus. Linnen allegedly outfitted himself in a hat, a pair of dark sunglasses and a trench coat. He then approached women, opened his coat and photographed his victims' shocked faces.
Linnen, a former lawyer, was apprehended in November 2003 when one of his victims fought back and grabbed his trench coat. The woman alerted police who arrested Linnen and found a camera in his possession.
A search of Linnen's home uncovered pictures of other women he had ambushed. Domis said police matched the pictures to previous complaints filed by 40 other women in the Columbus area.
The flasher-photographer was charged with 53 counts of public indecency, sexual imposition and aggravated trespassing, and was facing a possible 15-year jail sentence. He pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal that reduced his sentence to 18 months.
Linnen will be sentenced on Sept. 27. A judge will then determine if he should register as a sexual offender.

Man Accused of Leaving Feces on Produce
BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) - A grocery store closed and cleaned its produce section and inspected all of its other merchandise as police arrested a 23-year-old homeless man accused of leaving human feces on the produce.
The man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of malicious mischief, police spokesperson Tory Mangione said Monday.
The man was arrested late Sunday night at Highland Park, across the street from the Evergreen Village Safeway.
According to police reports, the man is accused of placing the fecal matter on produce in the store sometime Sunday evening. The store closed its produce section and later the entire store to dispose of fruits and vegetables and cleaned the entire area before reopening.
The store said any customers concerned about purchases made Sunday evening at that Safeway can return them for a refund or exchange.
Police said evidence found on the arrested man and physical evidence at the scene led to the arrest.

OK, I know this story is already posted by someone else on the boards, but it's well worth posting on this topic since it IS a stupid crime.

Men Allegedly Bomb McDonald's Over Shake
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP/The Ledger) - Two brothers serving in the military and a third man exploded a small bomb inside a McDonald's because they were angry over a bad milkshake, officials said. No one was hurt and damage to the restaurant was minor.
Pedro Garza, 19; Joshua Hackey, 19; and Nathaniel Hackey, 21; were arrested Saturday on felony charges of making and discharging a destructive device. The older Hackey is in the Army and his brother is in the Coast Guard, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
"One of the guys said they got a bad milkshake, and they played a prank on them," sheriff's Maj. Sammy Taylor said.
Investigators say the men mixed toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil in a plastic soda bottle as they sat at a table Friday evening near the restaurant's restrooms. They then capped the bottle, put it on the table and left before it exploded at 10:45 p.m. Friday. A customer sitting 10 feet away wasn't hit by the splashing chemicals.
"The toilet bowl cleaner has an acid base," Taylor said. "It can burn your skin and put your eyes out."
The three were identified from a surveillance video, investigators said.
Marla Baine, the Hackeys' older sister, said they did not think about the consequences of their action and now regret them.
"It's a stupid prank, and they weren't thinking," she said. "I've had calls from them already, and they said they wish they could turn back the hands of time."
Baine said her brothers are "two good kids," who had never been in trouble with the law.
"Nathan said he's ready to face what's coming to him," she said. "Maybe they'll be made examples, and people won't do this type of thing."

'Mad Tacker' Blamed for Flattening Tires
DALTON, Ga. (AP) - Robert Holcomb had a pretty sharp grudge against local police, and now he's accused of criminal damage for allegedly throwing nails on the roads in front of the police station and jail for more than six months.
Holcomb, dubbed "The Mad Tacker" by police, is blamed for flattening tires of at least seven sheriff's patrol cars and seven personal vehicles of Whitfield County 911 Center employees.
"Sooner or later he got just about everybody coming and going," said sheriff's Maj. John Gibson.
Holcomb, 35, was arrested after an officer spotted him dumping nails on a street near the county jail.
The officer pulled over Holcomb's 1995 Chevrolet Z71. During a search, authorities found two boxes of galvanized roofing nails, one box of aluminum siding nails and a bowl containing roofing nails.
He was charged with first-degree criminal damage to property, three counts of damaging government property, two counts of first-degree criminal trespass, three counts of littering and 14 counts of interference with government property.
He was being held in jail Monday with a $35,000 bond. It was Holcomb's first arrest, Gibson said.

Man Gets Extra Time for Mooning Judge
MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A New Haven man returned to the Milford courtroom where he mooned the judge and this time he left with more prison time.
Three months after dropping his pants in front of Superior Court Judge Patrick Carroll, Richard Brown was back in the courtroom Monday for a plea agreement on a robbery.
Brown's June 23 pants dropping cost him a year in prison. He got six months for contempt of court and an extra six months that the prosecutor tacked on to the sentence offered in a plea agreement for robbery.
Brown's outburst in June began when Carroll told him to say "yes, sir" when addressing the court.
"Sir? Kiss my (expletive), sir!" Brown shouted, dropping the pants of his two-piece prison jumpsuit as he turned to expose his rear end to the bench.
According to terms of the plea agreement, Brown will be sentenced in December to 10 1/2 years in prison for holding up the Krauszer's market in West Haven, on Dec. 11, 2003.
Browns will begin serving that sentence when he finishes his six months for contempt for the mooning the judge.

Drag Marks Lead Police to Alleged Thief
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) - This thief may want to rethink his approach. Police arrested a 49-year-old man for allegedly stealing several large pieces of equipment from a lumber yard after detectives followed drag marks to his house.
The man allegedly took an engine, transmission, compressor and a bucket for a front end loader early Sunday, said Deputy Chief Brian O'Keefe. The equipment was worth about $4,500, he said.
The suspect apparently made several trips to his house about five blocks away, pulling the goods by a cable, leaving grooves in the road, O'Keefe said.
Detectives arrested him Sunday.

'Naked Photographer' Sentenced to Jail
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An attorney was sentenced to a year and a half in jail for ambushing dozens of women while nude and taking pictures of their shocked expressions.
But Stephen Linnen, 34, won't lose his law license and will be allowed to leave jail to continue work as a law clerk.
He must start serving his time next week after being sentenced Monday under a plea bargain in Ohio's Franklin County Common Pleas Court. He pleaded guilty earlier this month to 53 misdemeanor counts of public indecency, sexual imposition and criminal trespassing.
Linnen, a former lawyer for the Ohio House Republican caucus, has admitted to photographing women while he was unclothed over nearly two years, gaining the name "the naked photographer." He apologized in court, but none of his victims was there.
Judge Tommy Thompson declined to label Linnen a sexual offender, saying he was not a threat to the community and was unlikely to repeat the offense.
Thompson ordered Linnen to keep seeking psychiatric treatment. Linnen said in court that he meets with a psychologist weekly and goes to daily meetings for people addicted to sex.
Prosecutors said they might appeal the judge's decision not to make Linnen register as a sexually oriented offender.

Teacher Investigated for Phony Test
OXON HILL, Md. (AP) - School officials in a Washington, D.C., suburb have a lot of questions about a phony test given to some high school students.
Prince George's County school officials are apologizing to parents for the test that included questions about drugs, crime and weapons.
Officials say a tenth-grade geometry teacher at Oxon Hill High School administered what is being called a "fake math proficiency test." It contained math word problems beginning with phrases like "Jose has two ounces of cocaine," "Willie gets $200 for a stolen BMW," and "Raul gets six years for murder."
One parent says she's appalled.
The school board says it will take what it calls "appropriate administrative action" and apologize to parents in writing.

Man Charged in Ump Attack at Charity Game
LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) - A man was charged with battery for attacking an umpire during a benefit softball game at a city park. Martin Hernandez, 30, of Michigan City, could face up to one year in jail and a fine of $5,000 if convicted of the misdemeanor for the alleged attack Sunday in the city about 30 miles west of South Bend.
"Apparently, he didn't like the way balls and strikes were being called," LaPorte Police Capt. Lynn Cains said Tuesday.
The umpire threw Hernandez out of the game. As the umpire turned around and started walking away, Hernandez came up and struck him in the back of the head, said Cains, the department's chief of detectives.
Umpire Terry Sherrill, 39, also of Michigan City, was knocked to the ground and hit several more times before a group of men pulled the assailant off him, Cains said.
Sherrill was not seriously injured.
"He's going to be OK," Cains said. "The first report said he was unconscious, but apparently he was not unconscious, he was just dazed."
The softball game was not a park-sanctioned event but a private fund-raiser by a group that included Hernandez, who was at bat when the argument with Sherrill began, witnesses said.
The Associated Press left a telephone message seeking comment at Hernandez's home on Tuesday.
"Unfortunately, you're never going to be able to prevent something like this from happening," said Karl Swihart, Parks Department recreation director. "Some people get so caught up in the game that they let their emotions overflow. People just have to remember it's just a recreational activity."

Dad says assistant principal duct taped son's sagging pants
DUNLAP, Ind. (AP) — The father of a seventh-grader claims an assistant principal came up with a bizarre way to keep his son's pants from sagging in school: duct tape.
Scott Allison told the Concord School Board earlier this month that his 12-year-old son, Spencer, was ordered by a teacher to lift his shirt after she noticed the boy's underwear was showing above his pants, a violation of Concord Junior High School's dress code.
She sent him to Assistant Principal Patricia Walters, who told Spencer to pull up his pants and tuck in his shirt, Allison said.
"She then proceeded to duct tape his waist, three times around the waist," said Allison. "Then she sent him back to class, in front of his peers."
He said he worried his son would be mocked by his classmates at the school in the town about 20 miles east of South Bend.
"This outrages me and shocks me," Allison said.
Allison also said that Spencer's underwear would not have been exposed if the shirt was left down. "I don't understand what motivated her to ask him to lift up his shirt," he said.
Board President Randall Myers said the board would not discuss personnel issues in public. Junior high Principal Kevin Caird said student discipline is confidential.

Lawyer gets jail for ambushing women while nude, taking pictures
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An attorney was sentenced to a year and a half in jail for ambushing dozens of women while nude and taking pictures of their shocked expressions.

Cops: Man Stages Invasion to Impress Wife
EDMOND, Okla. (AP) - A man staged a fake home invasion so he could impress his wife by chasing off the supposed bad guys, police said.
On Monday night, a 27-year-old man and his 31-year-old wife reported that two males in ski masks broke into the house, bound her hands with duct tape and put her in the bathroom.
The man was not home at the time.
He told police he came home and scared the men away, hitting one of them with a two-by-four.
Police spokeswoman Glynda Chu said the invaders were a juvenile and an 18-year-old man, who had been told it was a practical joke by the woman's husband.
One told his parents what happened, and they notified police.
Chu said the homeowner told police it was a hoax when he was questioned Tuesday. He told police he was trying to convince his wife he was a hero, and had asked the two teenagers to stage the break-in, police said.
No arrests were made and police did not release the names of the people involved.

Court Reporter Allegedly Sips Vodka on Job
MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) - A court reporter found herself on the other side of the law after failing a sobriety test at work. Myrna Gay Parrish, 50, was booked into the Haskell County jail on complaints of misdemeanor public intoxication after finishing work in a judge's courtroom Monday, officials said.
Parrish was released Tuesday morning on a $200 bond, the standard fine for such charges, said Joe Denney, public information officer for Haskell County Sheriff's Department.
Parrish was arrested about 6 p.m. Monday after someone in an elevator with Parrish notified the sheriff's office they believed they smelled alcohol on her, Denney said.
"Parrish was brought down to the sheriff's office from the courthouse and given a field sobriety test. They determined she was intoxicated, and she was placed in the Haskell County Jail," Denney said.
Parrish, a temporary court reporter, had been in the courtroom of Special District Judge Farley Ward taking down information during a preliminary hearing.
Deputies returned to the courtroom for evidence and found a glass they believed was filled with vodka.
"They recovered a glass in which she was sipping a straw that smelled like pretty rank vodka," Denney said.
District Attorney Chris Wilson said officials will decide what will happen the drug manufacturing case Parrish was transcribing when they see a transcript.
"Until such time as we get a copy of the transcript, we won't know anything," Wilson said.
A tape recorder also was running during the hearing, and the tape may serve as a backup.

Student Allegedly Tries to Bribe Teacher
WILSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) - A 17-year-old high school student was detained and released after being accused of trying to bribe a teacher to alter attendance records so he could make a drug run.
The student handed a note with some money to Matthew Courtney, who teaches English as a second language, promising to make him rich if he went along with the scheme, said Deputy Joel Manley, a spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
The note said the student had taken orders for drugs from other students and had to go to Arizona and California to pick up a shipment, authorities said.
Courtney reported the incident to the principal, who called police. The student was arrested Thursday.
"Never in my 26 years of police work have I ever heard of a student trying to bribe a teacher," said Sgt. Kim Klusmann.
The sheriff's office was looking into whether the incident might be a hoax or practical joke, Klusmann said.
The amount of the intended bribe might have been less than $100, he said.
If convicted as an adult of bribe-giving, a Class B Felony, he could get as much as 20 years in jail and a fine of $250,000.
A deputy has been assigned to follow up on students who may have placed drug orders.
Some of the drugs thought to be involved may be methamphetamines, Klusmann said.
