xxL new investigation

How are these numbers generated? I keep trying to figure out if they have to do with lat/long coordinates, but I'm not seeing how they exactly line up. Could anyone help?

The 90s? :) I wonderd too.

They start the beginnign of the season with 90L and rotate around- the secod invest will be 91L etc until they get to 99L- when they swing back around to 90L.

I'm not sure either. Afterwards, they become "01L Alex," "02L Bonnie," "03L Charlie," and so forth.

Exactly. 90-series numbers are issued to the invests. The follow in order (90, 91, 92...) until 99. At that time, they'll go back to 90.

Additionally, 80-series numbers are issued to test (fake) storms.

So, in the case of one storm you'd have

90L when it was an invest
01L when it became a tropical depression
01Alex when it became a tropical storm/hurricane

Actually, the L will stay regardless of whether it's a named storm or not.

90L_Invest
01L_Noname
01L_Alex

The letter-suffix denotes what basin it's in.

L = N Atlantic
E = NE Pacific
C = NC Pacific
W = NW Pacific
A = Arabian Sea
B = Bay of Bengal
P = S Pacific
S = S Indian

Although these aren't standard, they've used...
T = S Atlantic
M = Mediterranean
