Why is "Ivan" being called Ivan?

AT 10 PM CDT...0300Z...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION IVAN WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 34.3 NORTH...LONGITUDE 86.2 WEST OR ABOUT
25 MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF GADSDEN ALABAMA.

THE DEPRESSION IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST NEAR 14 MPH.

How then six days later the same Ivan - travelling north-northwest can now be revive444 miles SOUTH of it last known position? At one time affecting states on the north-eastern seaboard and then now waaay back down into the Gulf of Mexico? The NHC guys must be tired and surely made an error!

No error. This is a partical remnant of Ivan. The bulk of the energy is crossing the Atlantic. This rode along the coast. It's a bone fide part of Ivan.

No matter if it were 50 or 500 or 1,000 miles away from it's last advisory position... the remnant or in this case, a remnant of a system that redevelops gets the name it previously had.

Ivan should be called "King Ivan". Clearly, he has crossed the board and can now move both forwards and backwards.

There wouldn't be any debate had the system never split ... but the problem that it did, and in the NHC re-initialization of Ivan, it DEVELOPED A NEW SFC CIRC (Hyperstorm's post). The same thing happened with Iris crossing into the E PAC with the renaming since the CORE dissipated..and with Tropical Depressions #6 and #7 where the parent tropical wave SPLIT ... and #7 was classified instead of being #6 still ... goes against the standard set from the last few years ...

So what rules apply when more than one remnant redevelops at the same time? Ivan1, Ivan2?

Actually, Tropical Depression Ivan and then it's remnants actually travelled just over 2,000 miles from near 37.50°N 79.40°W, (15 miles northwest of Lynchburg, Virginia) at 11:00 PM Eastern last Friday.

From this position, Ivan move northeasterly into New Jersey... then to it's eventually south and southwestward movement along the Eastern Seaboard to off the southeast coast of Florida, yesterday to it's latest position this evening.

There wouldn't be any debate had the system never split ... but the problem that it did, and in the NHC re-initialization of Ivan, it DEVELOPED A NEW SFC CIRC (Hyperstorm's post).

The fact that a piece of Ivan redeveloped is rare in itself, so it being given the same name in this instance doesn't happen too often.
