This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Fujiwhara with Three Systems?

#1 Postby Valkhorn » Tue Sep 21, 2004 3:02 pm

As you can see with this image:

Image

We now have three tropical systems - Lisa, Karl, and Jeanne pretty close to each other. With the fact that Jeanne is not moving north and northeast right now, and with Karl probably recurving, and Lisa moving to the south of Karl, is this possibly a very unusual Fujiwhara effect with three systems?

Has this ever even happened before in the Atlantic? Has the West Pacific ever dealt with three or even four or five storms interacting with each other?[/img]

Karl has already recurved and is moving north, Jeanne is stationary and no longer moving east at all. The only thing I could see happening is Matthew, which will be that wave behind Lisa, may gobble her up.

93L joins the dance in the atlantic and it will be very interesting to see how Lisa and future td#14/Matthew interact.

A Fujiwhara effect, Yoda, would do JUST what's happening now. With Karl and Lisa, Karl would move north, Lisa would stay south.

With those two systems and their proximity, they would outweigh the fujiwhara effect with Jeanne, however I wonder if Jeanne is being pushed a little further south due to Karl moving north and pushing the ridge back west and south.

In other words, if Matthew develops (or Ivan redevelops) we'd have a very unusual setup. It seems the hurricanes from Cape Verde are rolled up into a perpetual loop. And, if Jeanne, Karl, and Lisa are still around for the next four days we could see another time with four concurrent systems.

Now if Matthew and Ivan redeveloped, we'd have five concurrent systems. I have no idea on the odds of that but I wouldn't be surprised.

I've heard about the Fugiwara (spelling?) effect enough to get the gist of it. But can anyone give me an example(s) of when it has actually occurred? Thanks.

Yes, 1995 ... Humberto and Iris, and Iris eventually absorbing the weaker and smaller Karen into its circulation ...

Apparently I have to post this again....

The Fujiwara Effect is where two tropical cyclones of near equal size and strength rotate around each other, creating a central low pressure gyre. Low Pressure = Counterclockwise.....therefore, IF it were possible for Karl and Lisa to have a Fujiwara (which it is note because A) There is a small ridge of high pressure between the two and B) Karl is MUCH bigger than Lisa.) Karl would move SOUTH and Lisa would move NORTH. Jeanne and Karl are too far apart to interact in a Fujiwara. I would be concerned about Lisa and 93L to do a Fujiwara...they are closer to the same size and strength...which would cause Matthew to go North and Lisa to go South. That is similar to Iris/Humberto in 1995.

Fujiwara Effects:

Tropical Storm/Hurricane Iris (45/80 MPH) and Hurricane Humberto (85/100 MPH)----1995.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Gil (100/65 MPH) and Tropical Storm Henriette (65 MPH)------2001.

Thanks. Was about to reply to Valkhorn that Karl would actually move southward while Lisa moves north...he had them the wrong way around.

Jeanne is too far from Karl for a Fujiwara effect, but Karl, Lisa and 93L (especially the latter two) are close enough.

Even Karl and Lisa are not close enough...because of the size of Lisa....read my previous reply for more explanation, x-y-no.

So if Lisa and future Matt were close enough for the fujiwhara effect to commence, Lisa would go south and Matt would go north?

Fujiwhara

#17 Postby Aslkahuna » Wed Sep 22, 2004 7:27 pm

does not of necessity require two storms of equal size and intensity to occur. In 1967, a classic Fujiwhara occurred between typhoons Marge and Nora with Nora, a small very intense typhoon and Marge a larger weaker system. In this case, Marge eventually absorbed Nora. For a multiple storm Fujiwhara, check out the WPAC tracks for July 1972-specifically the interactions between Supertyphoon Rita and several other storms.

Aslk...generally it does....now I don't doubt that small intense cyclone and a large weaker one does...as that pretty much happened with Gil/Henriette in 2001 in the beginning....generally a small intense cyclone can't absorbed a large weak one, but a weak storm isn't powerful enough to shear the smaller one to death.
