Is there a study on why weaker storms like Ivan have a tendency to remain offshore as they approach the coast? My memory would indicate that these weak systems tend to stall about 10-50 miles offshore and drift away from the acute angle as they approach the coast. This usually makes their landfall about 50 miles away from the point a simple extension of the trend would put it.
I would be interested if this is the same phenomenon as the one that caused Ivan to move around Jamaica and Grand Cayman Island.
