FL East Coast Cleanup Efforts From Frances.

#1 Postby adelphi_sky » Thu Sep 23, 2004 10:47 am

Just wondering how far along the cleanup efforts have gotten and how much more damage Jeanne may cause if it hits FL again. Maybe as a strong cat 2.

There is still plenty of debris piled up everywhere that I have seen. I'm still trying to beg my neighbor to take down the rest of his tree before it takes out the power lines YET AGAIN!

in my area ...

which is NE Palm Beach County, an area that got the SW eyewall of Frances, the cleanup has made decent progress. But it is by no means done. All power, most phone lines, and cable is back up (mine was repaired just a couple days after Frances hit, thankfully). Lots of tree debris has been carted away by big trucks and bulldozers in the past few days. They picked up all my branches, leaves, twigs, etc. last Friday afternoon. I've also seen several trucks carrying debris to a local collection site from other neighborhoods.

But there are still lots of broken-in-half trees laying around, smaller stacks of debris along roadsides and piled up in swales, fenceboards and posts lying on the curb, etc. So unfortuantely, if we get the strongest winds, there could be a lot of unintended missiles flying around. We'll see.

In my neighborhood the debris from both Charley! and Frances was picked up just YESTERDAY! Street Lights on A1A are still out (Frances whacked them good) in Ormond Beach (just north of Daytona)

Wo got hammered with Frances, not super high winds, but 24+ hours of 40-50 with higher gusts.

Still cleaning up around here.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- More than two weeks after Hurricane Frances tore down countless trees and limbs, the city admitted it's only cleaned up about 50 percent of the debris.

They just carted off the last remaining bits of downed trees and limbs yesterday here. I hope they don't go far, because I get the feeling we're going to need them back real soon.

A concern of mine is that the majority (80%?) of the signalized intersections that I've seen in West Palm and Palm Beach Gardens are still missing 30-50% of their signals... and the wires are rather haphazardly thrown up there. If Jeanne hits this area again, will there be any signals left? How does a county handle so many signals being gone? What does that do to traffic?

So far in the Boynton/Delray area where I am there are tons of debris piles. They are still growing too. Some of the main streets have had them cleared. I would have had my own cleanup finished today, except I had to start preparing for Jeanne. Perfect timing that is. We also still have many intersections with fewer traffic lights than before, but at least all have some in working order. My phone never went out. Don't have cable. Electricity took 8 days to get back, a bit longer for some others right in the area. At least I still have the really difficult shutters up.
