I was just thinking that if Jeanne hits Miami-Dade, that would mean that the presidential debate set there for Thursday, September 30th might be called into question. Has any one heard anything about that? Does anyone know about the structural integrity?
Also, I hope the University staff and students stay safe and this dodges them! Hopefully, it won't hit anywhere!
Serious post-Will University of Miami be safe?

I'm sure the building will be fine. A concrete building will survive a Cat 3.
I didn't even think about the debate though...

Shouldnt be a problem as the debate is still a week away. As for the students and staff, the U takes all precautions including removing students from the top 5 floors of the 12 story towers as they did for Francis. Anyway, they are already putting shutters on the top floors as a security concern for the debate, and all students must have their IDs with them or they will be removed from campus. Also, this has been a bad week for UM, a student jumped from the 8th floor of the Hect Tower on Saturday and died, also, a rape is being investigated that occurred on campus over the weekend. All this is being hushed up a bit with the debate on its way.

Brent....yeah...I just thought of the debate a half-hour ago and I was like....wow!
What's bad is I've been talking about the debate all day today, but didn't make the correlation between the hurricane. LOL
If they do lose power... I'm sure generators will be used. There are 2 alternate sites in case something really bad happens, but I don't think it'll be that bad.

But it is certainly going to be a pain in the arse. For example, all major media outlets are already arriving in Miami. The Miami Student Fitness center has been closed and all equipment removed and that is being used as the press area where CNN etc will be broadcasting starting monday. The secret service and staffers are already here on campus, walking around, checking ids, etc, and staffers are here as well. All in all, this hurricane makes an annoying situation much more of a headache.

Actually it was from the 12th floor of Rosborough Tower. Haven't heard about the rape though.
As for our safety...UM students who live on campus aren't forced to evacuate. In fact, I'm told that the residential towers can withstand 300 MPH winds. The top 6 floors have to move down to the bottom 6 floors if winds get above Cat 1 force.

Your absolutely right.
Look at this way though... the media can kill two birds with one stone this way. Cover the hurricane and then the debate.

I am thinking about riding this out from my office on the Rickenbacker Causeway. I have confidence in my place that we'll be fine
Yeah, most of RSMAS is solidly built ...
Remember to park your car up a level or two, though.
