Hook signature w/ Ivan as he *attempts* to make landfall...

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Hook signature w/ Ivan as he *attempts* to make landfall...

#1 Postby PurdueWx80 » Thu Sep 23, 2004 5:22 pm

This doesn't look good for folks south of Lake Charles. It appears a vortex has spun up within the western "eyewall" of Ivan just as he is about to make it ashore. There are easily hurricane force gusts in this vortex, and I wouldn't doubt it if a tornado is in there somewhere.

This is assuming he makes landfall there - w/o one of his infamous last minute wobbles to the west or WSW.

Lake Charles doppler base velocity is showing outbound windspeeds of -71KT at a beam height of 2000 ft.

I just saw this...amazing. If this convection keeps wrapping up like this, there will EASILY be hurricane force gusts, albeit in a relatively localized area.

It is a little hard to tell what's going on with all of this convective flare up. Landfall is technically when the center of the eye/storm crosses land, so no, not yet. The motion is highly erratic too, so it will be pretty difficult to pinpoint the exact location.

As long as it keeps moving and weakens...Would hate to see any type of stall...Get it on land...Sooner the better...

Well Purdue, whatever he's doing, I'd have to think that little hook you pointed out is right now SURPRISING quite a few folks on the LA coastline!!

Yup, I've been watching the LCH radar loop for a while.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/loop/DS.p ... klch.shtml

I thought the center was a little further east, but you can see it trying to wrap around again and it looks to be getting a little tighter also. Wish recon was there now cause I bet the pressures are falling again. I thought for the last hour or so it was moving NNW and getting ready to make landfall, now I'm not so sure. Should be easier to follow until that convection gets blown away again or maybe the shear is finally letting up. Man if it hadn't been for shear it could have really been ugly.

It's not quite there yet...but there is definitely still a hook on the southwestern side of the "eye". Looks to be some impressive gate-to-gate rotation - does anyone have access to a site to see if there is a TVS???

Interesting, on the Radarlab on Weathertap (can't send the link, it's protected), it's showing a TVS right in the center of Ivan.

Have to admit Ivan sure does look more impressive now on that radar then a few hours ago..

Of course, I haven't ever really bothered to look at the storm tables for landfalling tropical storms before: perhaps they ALL show TVS's near the center due to the gate-to-gate shear.

So far we aren't getting any winds and barely any showers with this. I'm just about 2 miles north of the Cameron Parish line. I think Ivan's playing with us.

Poof...just about as fast as it developed, it disappeared.

Go figure.
