I'm BACK!! From the Ivan War Zone.

I'm sure you all saw a lot of footage of Pensacola on the news. We took an EXTREMELY bad hit here in Pensacola. The East quadrant of the Ivan eyewall went over Pensacola-which means we got NO break from the eye. We took a constant POUNDING from about 11PM Sept. 15 to about 5AM Sept. 16th. I JUST NOW got phone service. I'm running this computer on a generator. It's been a little over a week and no power yet. Ivan RUINED the main bridge on I-10 that I use just about every day. Traffic right now is KILLER. It takes over an hour for me to get where I want to go! My house survived despite the 10 trees down all over the property. I lost a few shingles-but I was very lucky compared to the folks down the road that live on the water....
One house on my street DISAPPEARED and several others lost EVERYTHING. The storm surge had to have been that of a Category 5 Hurricane! Ivan should have been kept as a 135mph CAT4 Hurricane right up to landfall because that's exactly the damage that it caused. 130mph CAT3 isn't at all different from a CAT4. The water came half way up my street. I never thought that would happen. INCREDIBLE. Fortunately it didn't make it this far up the street. Ivan surpassed all our expectations. Hurricane Opal was bad. Ivan was WORSE!! It's been literally a war zone around here. Gasoline is like gold.

It looks to me like Ivan's total bill will surpass that of Hurricane Andrew. Ivan was a HUGE storm compared to Andrew so the damage was more widespread. Not to mention-Ivan destoryed a major four lane highway bridge that folks from All over Florida to California use!!


I guess that's it for now. It's going to take a long time for folks here to get back to normal. :(

I waited the storm out at my church. It was like a freight train all night long!

A wind gauge at NAS Pensacola hit 123mph before the gauge was destroyed.............

This hurricane season will go down in history-that's for sure.

and the rebuilding process isn't much fun either.

The images of that I-10 bridge are amazing.
Lifting a whole section of concrete and steel up and
off the pilings and dumping them into the gulf is no small feat.

Glad you made it relatively ok (no damage).

We have family in Flomaton AL (40 miles north of you) lots of problems up there too. Uncle is in the
military and drove from ElPaso with generators
and chainsaws in his truck to take to the locals.

I loaned him my generator since we were spared,
and the 10gallons of gas I had. There are so many
folks hurting in LA (lower Alabama) and Florida. :(

What part of Pensacola are you in? I'm located off hwy 98, Perdido Bay right before the Lillian Bridge. Lots of damage over here and still dont have power.

I'm just 6 miles East of Scenic Highway across the I-10 bridge that was destroyed in the Avalon Blvd. area.


Quazar-glad you made it ok too!

Never in my dreams did I ever think a hurricane could destroy that bridge like it did! They found out it would have taken a 40 foot high wall of water to do what it did!! wow!

Did anyone ever decide if the truck driver (who should nothave been driving to begin with) survived or died?

Unfortunately the truck driver was found dead. I heard he was from Texas.

Yep-the truck driver was found dead. I have NO IDEA why he was out there in a Hurricane!!

SirCane-- Glad your phone is working, again. Hopefully, your power will soon follow. I had business over in Baldwin County yesterday and got to see some of the damage over there firsthand. Parts of the Eastern Shore are still a mess! It really surprised me the difference just on the other side of Mobile Bay. I have seen the pictures and video from Pensacola and it truly looks (and sounds)awful. I cannot imagine what it is like on the ground level. I pray things will get better for y'all soon!

Glad you and your family are OK and made it through the storm with just some trees down. I know we were so lucky here in Pascagoula because it was headed right at us until the last 50 miles out. If there is anything that we can do here in Pascagoula, let us know by email...we can drive over very easily.

They say the driver of the truck was delivering supplies to the people in Florida that were affected by Frances.......just one of the news reports.

One of my brothers lives in Crestview and they were lucky as well, just some minor roof damage and fences down.

Remeber you have friends on Storm2k and some of us are nearby and are willing to help you!
