Fellow SC people, I have some questions for you.

Hey Kris.

I have all the batteries and water, etc already. I'll gas up tonight or tomorrow, and make sure we have food that doesn't require electricity.

Otherwise, I'll be watching the storm closely and if it looks like it could be a threat, I'm getting up at 4am to move inland a bit. I don't ever want to get caught in Floyd-like traffic.

I don't expect to need to leave, though. But we will leave if we're expecting a direct hit of a 2 or above (maybe 1, my partner's a little nervous after all the transformers kept exploding behind our house during Gaston).

CHV-- what part of town are you in? I'm at Windermere & Folly Rd, near 61. Our streets flood pretty badly, and I'm awfully close to the Ashley River.

Just teasing. I'm in Crowfield Plantation, Goose Creek and never seem to lose my electricity...even during Floyd when everyone around me did. Went out a bought a generator after Gaston just in case.

..Its not a columbia type hill.....I dont know if you've ever been to newington plantation subdivision, is so, it's that kind of hill.....lol

This thread fills so much like home ... as for Folly Rd Blvd and S Windermere, I've seen that place flood in miniscule downpours that last only a few minutes ... I cross that location every day I go to work (since I'm just down the road at the James Island Post Office)

But I live near Summerville, on one of those "hills" that CHV talks about, specifically about 2 miles E of the Oakbrook area ...

Yeah, but 60 mph wind speeds. That isn't too bad. I bought my batteries and my token water today. The 6pm forcast seemed like they weren't too worried here.
I have a ton of food in my freezer though. WOnder what my chances of losing electricity are...

I was there for Hugo...this won't be a Hugo for your area, but a good 60-80mph storm is going to trash your electrical grid, many falling pine trees. Be prepared to not have electricity for 5-7 days. Here in Asheville we were w/o electricity for a week from Ivan, and only had 50mph winds. Thousands of trees went down...Also entire city lost it's water for 3 days. Prepare for the worst....and hope for the best. Good Luck!

Oh, one more question. Everyone here talks about Floyd. Now I know Floyd was a bigger storm, but how many days out did they think it was coming north? I mean, nothing like that will happen, right? We aren't that many days out.

Hi Chemist44! Gaston was 70 something, I think. Our power did okay. We lost alot of trees and had minor flooding, but everthing else was okay.

Gaston was a very small hurricane, this is much larger and it's coming from the south, which could put you in the NE quadrant. I'm just telling you from experience, it sucks to be unprepared. Very hard to find things after and very time consuming. You need to watch this storm, if the eye stays out over the water as it makes it's turn, it could be much stronger than you are expecting.

I'm thinking of getting a generator myself. All set on radio, food, water, lamps, batteries and the new(and last) Stephen King Dark Tower book(840 pages) which should kill the time.

If you are planning to eat from cans if the power goes out, have a MANUAL can opener available ((a decent deep one, not the skimpy little things that are the el cheapest at the dollar store)). And don't expect to have hot water available for cleanup ((unless you have supplies for heating water)).

If you are worried about your refrigerator, fill it full of all sorts of water bottles and canned beverages NOW so that they will get cool too and help the perishables stay unperished for a time if the power goes out.

Filling out the voids in your freezer with LOTS of ice cubes ((or of partially filled flexible bags of water)) also can help. Just DO NOT open the door ((unless it is obvious that you have to grab everything and throw a big barbecue for the neighborhood)).

The NHC map shows her bouncing into the mouth of the Savannah river on the second landfall. Seems I read something once about this not being a particularly good thing to have happen. Also, there are all those sea-level barrier islands there with one bridge connections to the mainland and pricey real estate like Hilton Head.

Road. They boarded horses on the property. First house on the right
after turning off the road where the fire station is. Think it's Fort Johnson
Rd not sure. Lots of memories there.
