request from friends in SC

#1 Postby iluvseashore » Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:14 pm

I have friends in Paris Island, SC who are worried. They haven't lived there long but hear that it floods there fairly easily. I know its early in the game for SC but what do you guys think she should do?

They'll usually recommend a voluntary evacuation of barrier islands and mobile homes first... I'd say that's when she should take the hint and move inland.

The SC lowcountry floods during a full moon...welcome to SC. Charleston streets turn into rivers once a month.

Wait to see what it's actually going to do...if it "drags" the coast, it may lose some of it's strength.

How close to the water do they live? Another consideration is to find out what the Marine Corps Training Depot is doing...

they are not saying anything right now. I think they are safe..I know I am not leaving this island with a cat 1 or 2. Now 3, I would think about it. The flooding is the problem I see here.

So, USCG_Hurricane_Watcher, being in the military, what are you hearing about Jeanne?

Yeah, USGS... welcome aboard. Good to have ya here.

For the people up on the island-- remember also that we've had river flooding in various parts of the state... if that's combined with really high tides and some rain, it could get ugly on the islands real fast. I'd be quite vigilant throughout the weekend, and watch what the other locals are doing.

Although... this IS SC where the locals move a bit slowly sometimes. :D

not sure how close to the water. She just moved there so I haven't visited. She told me Paris Island or Beufort is close I guess. I think watching the military is a pretty good idea too.

All of Beaufort is near the water. And I don't know about the "watch the military" idea. I know that a lot of staff was ordered to stay at Keesler air force base when Ivan was headed that way. They evac'd most equipment and vehicles, but the staff stayed hunkered down in their dorms.

Beaufort County is already at OpCon 3 so they'll keep the public informed.

I think she'll leave fairly early in the game because she is planning to evacuate to my sister's in Norfolk VA. Which may not be the best idea either depending where this thing goes LOL.
