What should we be doing in Jacksonville, FL and SE Georgia? I live one mile over the FL border across from the intercoastal waterway and am completely confused with what to do. We have friends in Jax who live in a sturdy, brick home with NO trees in their yard and have been invited to stay with them. We have a zillion large spanish oaks in our yard , and I am terrified to stay here in case one or more of them fall on the house. I am completely confused as to the current predicted path and what the wind speeds are expected to be here. Anyone have an opionion? Thanks for the help...I confess I am scared with two young children and two dogs (my first borns actually, haha!)

At the very least... hurricane force gusts and there's a good chance at Cat 1 sustained winds there.

If you don't feel safe in your own home, and their invitation is for you and your family to stay during the storm I would say GO stay with them!
Only if:
There not in a flood or storm surge zone
It's a concrete structure (CBS construction)
and the windows have been covered with sheets of plywood or shutters.
Otherwise, if all of these things are not in place, being in NE Fla myself, I would go to a shelter!
Winds of Hurricane gusts or sustained at 75-80 mph is very possible with the potential for tornados.

Brent, or anybody else, how much tidal surge could we expect in Jax.? I am of the understanding that the NE part of the storm is the worse part to have to deal with. As it looks right now, that is the part we will have to endure. Also, do you think boarding up the windows is needed? I'm a little more nervous with this one........but I'm just not sure what to do.

We are nearing the astronomical tidal max because of the approaching full moon, so the tide will be higher anyway. There should be a lot of coastal flooding all along the coast.

Tim Deegan is not better than George Winterling and his staff.

Tim only knows surf and beach forecasts. George has been forecasting on the First Coast since 1962, think he knows his stuff a little better.

Back to the original question, he also said that the Jacksonville area would see Tropical storm force winds with potential gusts up to 75 MPH.

Personally, my chief concern would be those trees. If there are any that could potentially fall on the house, I'd get out.

As far as Tim Deegan...well, let's just say that it's been my experience during day-to-day weather conditions to do a "Costanza" and do the opposite of whatever he forecasted.

I'm not sure about Winterling, but I will tell you that Tim Deegan had Frances totally wrong. It seemed like he wanted that storm here. As far as Jax goes, if you have trees you are worried about leave. I have seen alot of trees down from Frances and if the winds get up to over hurricane force, there will be alot more down this time. That is probably the biggest threat to this city is our abundance of trees. No major disaster in over 40 years to clean them out. Well it seems like natural pruning has begun, and mother nature is not finished yet.

To a degree, I kinda have to agree with ya about Tim wanting the storm here lol... He kept putting Jax in the middle sayying it could go across Cent/South Fla, Across Jax, or pass east to the Carolinas... Carolinas was never much of an option with frances in reallity other than the GFS... However, even with Frances brush, we saw a lot... He is sayying pretty much the same thing but with stronger outcomes as far as the Winds forecast 75 MPH winds sunday and monday. I prefer 12/25 over Channel 4...their storm coverage just seems better IMHO.

I ignore Deeg because he is wrong more than right, and a bit too drammatic. I get my BEST info from this website!! I do think that Channel 12 has the best tornado warning updates and that was very helpful over the past few weeks. I have watched GW since he started in the 1960s. He is mature and sensible. It's cool too that he had a daughter and named her Windy Gale!
