The State Authority of Haiti, most hurt by a tropical storm "Jeanne", are afraid, that huge waves in literal sense have washed off the Tortuga island, located to the north from the basic island. United Nations helicopters made flight over that area but have seen only storming sea. The area of Tortuga is 180 square kilometers; population is made 26 000 human beings. Today helicopters of the United Nations will make repeated flight of region.

An expedition of United Nations has been transferred to the island of the Turtle, in the North coast of Haiti, to evaluate the effects of the storm "Jeanne" when being afraid that it has disappeared.

Agencies - In a first recognition with helicopters, cash of the Mission of Stabilization of the United Nations (MINUSTAH) could not find the island, in which 26,000 people reside, reason why she has been decided to send a new expedition.
Haitian prime minister, Gerard Latortue, will possibly comprise of that expedition.
Haiti-PressNetwork agency, that mentions Latortue, informed today into which it is even afraid that the island has been able to disappear by the strong surge caused by the storm.
According to the same source, the Haitian minister of the Interior, Hérard Abraham, showed his preoccupation by the luck which they have been able to run the inhabitants of the Turtle, of 180 kilometers square.
The passage of the storm "Jeanne" by Haiti the past Sunday has caused more than 500 deaths and hundreds of wounded, according to the first balance that, according to the authorities of this country, are provisional and can be much more tragic according to advance the hours.

If true, it's a catastrophe...but what I can't fathom....how does a tropical depression or weak tropical storm "wash away"/ innundate an island??
When Jeanne passed just north of Tortuga, the max sustained winds were only 35-45 mph...a central pressure of 999 mb at Jeanne's closest approach to the island. This wasn't even a hurricane when it was in that area (just offshore the north coast of Haiti)....so I don't have a clue how storm surge could have possibly been that high. It would have taken a strong cat-3 hurricane to create a storm surge of that magnitude.

Let’s cut farmwx some slack. This was no hoax. It was a statement made by a Haitian Government official. It was due to incomplete and incorrect information, and a Government in crisis jumping to conclusions. For those that discounted the possibility that a major catastrophe might have occurred as a result of Jeanne, don’t be so sure of yourselves. Had you considered a major Tsunami caused by a landslide or sea slide? Such an event is a real possibility, and doesn't require a seismic event to trigger it. Haiti is an old Volcanic Island. The substrata contains much pumice and old volcanic ash. This material is very porous and absorbs water like a sponge. This makes it vulnerable to huge landslides when saturated as it is. If a large enough seaside hill collapsed into the sea, it could trigger such an event. Also an underwater escarpment might be dislodged by the rough seas. Luckily this wasn't the case. If you still have doubts, read this.

This whole ridiculous episode is the result of poor translation and lazy/incompetent media..and it's beginning to echo throughout more and more media sources.
La Tortue (It's NOT "Tortuga Island") is fine, it still exists, it's visible on satellite.
There WAS NO TSUNAMI.
A small quake like a 5.7 is utterly incapable of generating a tsunami.

I disagree DERECHO, if you have eever been in an earthquake then you should know that a 5.7 can cause tsunami's and that a 5.7 is not considered small by any means. I think you need to check JPL'S site on earthquake intensity. 5.7 IS NOT SMALL AND CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE! TRUST ME, I HAVE BEEN IN MANY INCLUDING NORTHRIDGE, WHITTIER NARROWS, AND THE 7.1 IN THE DESERT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
