Everyone on the news is now saying Cat 4 ...

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Lets hope it doesnt get to Cat 4. That would be devastating, especially for the people with tarps on their roofs from Frances. Im going to N Miami, I dont think it will get much maybe TS winds.

I have heard NHC three times on tv here and not once did they say probably a cat 4..who is telling you this? 4 is POSSIBLE but not likely, wether its 2,3,4 you have hurricane coming in and your preperatiosn should be exactly the same except for evacuation which is based on intensity. take it easy and prepare accordingly, you will feel better

The 5 am discussion says possibly a Cat 4.

I can confirm that many of the local mets are mentioning Cat 4, and yep, so does the NHC in their latest discussion.

The NHC at 5am is saying possibly, not probably. I think this is what a few people might be objecting to. There's a difference between the definition of these two words.

We will just have to wait and see. Some conditions are favorable for more strengthening, others are against it. Nobody is very good at predicting intensity forecasts, not even the NHC and they admit it.

plan for the worst, hope for the best. Strong 3's or weak 4's are just numbers...ask your fellow Floridians in Pensacola, their both trouble witha capital T.

FWIW, ABC affiliate in Tampa talked about a Cat 3 at landfall in their 8am. No mention of a Cat 4. Denis the met on that channel has proved to be my gold-standard for info -- he himself hasn't been on yet...so...who knows...

The way this thing is organizing itself, cat 4 looks VERY possible. Miami looks to have dodged ANOTHER one though...man.

siobhan222 wrote:jlauderdal, i don't know who you're listening to because EVERYONE I've listened to says it. The NHC says they would not be surprised if it's a Cat. 4 and that's in PRINT on their website, go look. ALL the news I've listened to this morning say probably a Cat 4. That includes Fox, MSNBC, The Weather Channel and NBC.

the original post said they heard probably a cat 4..that is much different than possible 4 which is what nhc says and local media in south florida. Again, who said PROBABLY a cat 4..thats the issue.

NHC probably shouldn't have mentioned Cat 4 at all.
Now the irresponsible broadcasters use CAT 4 and people think it will be or IS a cat 4.

Unfortunately, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I don't blame them for mentioning Cat-4, since the hurricane is strengthening, close to land, and moving over warm waters. After Charley, they are covering their bases. It's not the NHC's fault if the morons in the media can't comprehend the difference between the words "possibly" and "probably."
