People in florida are complacent...

I just got home from a car enthusiast type meet in pembroke pines, which is in broward. All my friends and their familes and their friends told me that this storm was heading far up the coast.... and not to worry. They said they saw it on the news sometime. lol

They and their neighbors haven't done much at all to get ready.
If this does come more browards way, they are screwed up the creek with no paddle.

I think people are just too exhausted for another hurricane. Just pray Jeanne doesn't intensify too much.

So TRUE, Eric! As of last night, I am one of only two families on my Cape Canaveral street that planned to leave. I was also the only one in my grocery store line yesterday that was planning to leave. This is the total opposite from Frances.

Hopefully, people are waking up this morning and changing their minds.

I agree with you. Between that and the denial that is so common, we could have real problems. They hear a OCM say one little phrase that is what they want to hear and then they tune out. They are likely thinking "well, Frances wasn't 'that bad', so we won't bother this time". They forget that each storm is different.

Well N.E. florida seems to be preparing. Was out this morning at 6AM to buy ice. Could hardly find any. Reports from local home depot and lowes stores say that there are already lines forming to get supplies. Most of us are worried about Frances storm debris, and contemplating how to shelter the debris so it does not bet blown around. Was tempted to burn my pile of tree branches in the street, but thought that the city might have a problem with that, especially if I torched a couple houses in the process. *LOL*

Following the discussion here, I'm in West Palm. My office held a meeting yesterday afternoon and when asked who was leaving I think two people out of 40 raised their hands. Before Frances, I'd say about 80% of my office staff left the area. This is going to be a big problem for 12-96 hours after the storm leaves and power is not back on, food and water and ice will become even more scarce than post Frances, gas will be impossible to find....simply too many people staying and around for the limited supplies that will be available.

I was so hoping ofr that northerly turn to show some signs at the 5AM report and the last few hours of GOES loops still amazes me that this storm, after wobbling for so long, settles down on an unbelievbaly consistent due west track....NOT what i would have believed to be possible...

On the surface, folks seem to be a bit complacent here in East Central Florida as well. The press is not seeing the mad lines at the grocery stores, Lowes, etc. What they dont realize, is the folks that were not prepared for Charley, dern sure got it together for Frances, and most have everything they need already. I do suspect gas may be a mess today, however. We live 26 miles inland, by the way, those on the coast are a different matter. My cousin lives two blocks from the beach in Cocoa, and he and his neighbors say they are staying put. Hope that works out okay for them.

if this storm turns major or Cat 4, I really feel like this could cause an immaense amount of last minute panic, and be an incredibly bad situation.

Local TV mets are part of the problem. NBC 6 meteorologist John Gerard was telling viewers around 4 am that Broward Co. and Miami-Dade would only get tropical storm force winds on the weaker side of the storm. He had his fancy wind field graphic based on last night's 11 pm track showing the storm hitting the St. Lucie Co. area. Very irresponsible! The NHC keeps urging us not to focus on the thin red line. If this storm continues due west, Broward will get hammered as will parts of North Miami-Dade.

I'm in Jax, one of our guys said nothing to worry about now. The anchor said they have the exact path and only west needs to worry. Last night they were the opposite. If someone was about to prepare they would have just stopped. Risky business to say that stuff at this point I think.

yeah castoff from channel 10 john gerrard discounts possibilites...he is awful

I can't believe people are thinking this way after seeing the other storms this year. This attitude is going to lead to more death....I sincerely hope people are ready to take cover. I think people are in some kind of weird state of disbelief that a powerful hurricane is knocking on the door again. There is likely an inner fear of what the results of this mess could be...all of this doesn't matter, now. People need to protect their own lives at this point, IMO. And, as always, don't forget the pets!

They should not show the projected wind field until land fall is fairly certain. John Gerard makes their morning guy, Lonnie Quinn, look better all the time and Quinn is just a weather actor.

Here in Miami Lakes (NW Dade) NOONE has done a darn thing to prepare in my neighborbood. People who took down shutters have not re-shuttered, patio furniture, plants still sit outside. Surprises me as this is a very similar set-up to Frances and we pulled out ALL the stops for that! I'm inclined to bring in my outdoor umbrella..........and that's about it.

edit: Hold the presses! I actually have one neighbor taking DOWN his panels! I kid you not! Guess today was the day for him no matter what!

Well, if they don't respect hurricanes by now. Perhaps they never will.

God help them if they are on the barrier islands and the storm gets up to a strong cat 3.

A lot of irresponsible forecasting is going on these days. The local mets are good. Granted and thumbs up. However with hurricanes. they should at least give the official weather service info and then add in their own opinions.

I'm afraid this will be more devastating, due to complacency.
I will report to let you know how long my neighbor (who was partying during Charley) keeps his garage door open.
-off to get a prescription filled.

at 9am, the state management officials are BEGGING people to leave evac zones.
"if someone thinks this storm is like Frances, they are mistaken. This storm is expected to intensify!"
