Rotation in Central GOM!

#1 Postby HouTXmetro » Sat Sep 25, 2004 10:08 am

With all the comotion from Jeanne, I noticed there is rotaion in the central Gulf of Mexico. I still doubt this area will develop in light of the close proximity of Jeanne . But it still needs to be watched if you ask me. Especially if convections starts firing up.

It's an upper low so either there would be hybrid development, or something would/could form on the periphery of this upper system. JB still thinks a system is likely, either something new, or something w/ the remnants of Ivan entrained into it. Ivan does look to be along the TX coast now on high res visible loops.

Where are you seeing rotation, HTM? (Not doubting ya, just trying to find it with my weary amateur eyes)

hmmm.... well if you look at the left side of the convection mass in the GOM it's moving south while the right side of convection is moving north. At least to my novice eyes that is an indication of rotation.

If we are seeing the same things...

I see the rotation about 300-350 miles due south of New Orleans. Fairly large area of rotation, if that is what it is.

Ah, okay, gotcha. I see what you're seeing, but like I said, amateur here, so I don't *what* we're seeing. :)

I checked the TWO and basin maps -- nothing there. But the discussion says:

GULF OF MEXICO...
BROAD DEEP LAYERED TROUGH EXTENDS FROM THE THE GREAT LAKES
THROUGH THE MID WEST OF THE UNITED STATES INTO TEXAS. A
SHORTWAVE TROUGH AXIS EXTENDS FROM CENTRAL COAST OF TEXAS INTO
THE GULF THROUGH A UPPER LEVEL LOW CENTERED NEAR 26N93W
CONTINUING S INTO THE BAY OF CAMPECHE NEAR 21N93W. THIS
SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS A RESULT OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL HIGH OVER
THE E PACIFIC AND THE MID/UPPER LEVEL HIGH CENTERED JUST N OF
THE YUCATAN PENINSULA NEAR 23N88W. THE RIDGE AXIS FROM THE
YUCATAN HIGH IS BEING NARROWED BY THE APPROACH OF THE UPPER
LEVEL HIGH OVER HURRICANE JEANNE. AN INDUCED INVERTED TROUGH
OVER THE FAR E GULF IS A RESULT OF THE ABOVE UPPER HIGHS. STRONG
SUBSIDENCE/DRY AIR IS OVER THE E GULF E OF 86W TO THE FLORIDA
PENINSULA. THIS DRY AIR IS GIVING WAY AS JEANNE CONTINUES TO
MOVE WESTWARD. THE HIGH LAYERED CLOUDS ARE OVER THE S FLORIDA
PENINSULA AND THE OUTER MOST RAINBANDS ARE APPROACHING THE
COAST. ONLY SCATTERED SHOWERS/ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS REMAIN IN
THE NW GULF N OF 26N FROM 91W-95W WHICH IS A RESULT OF THE
SURFACE TROUGH THAT IS THE REMNANT OF IVAN. ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS ARE ALONG THE COAST OF THE BAY OF CAMPECHE.

Where is the center of the remnants of Ivan? Please don't tell me it has made it back into the Gulf already. Convection just SW of Galveston has some type spin to it.
