it depends on two things:
1) where in Tampa you are
2) where Jeanne makes the turn

Tamap Bay does have a hurricane watch up now, and we could get more wind than we got with Frances in terms of speed. But Jeanne is moving faster than Frances, so that will help some.

I live in Tampa, and while I'm watching the storm, we're not overly worried about it. I saw one person on bayshore putting his wood back up, and I figured he's one of those 'I paid for them so I may as well use them types'. Otherwise, I see nothing of major consequence. Some rain, and 55-65 mph winds. Not my idea of a great sunday, but compared to what could have happened, I'm not complaining.

noah, i just finished boarding up. at first i wasn't going to put the boards up but after the track shifted toward us a little at 11 and after reading the local nws weather outlook i decided better safe than sorry. local nws outlook calls for 45-50 mph winds beginning tonight and increasing to 70 mph tomorrow with gusts to 90 mph. definitely looks like a stronger wind event than frances.

IS 65 mile an hour winds bad?? are we in a hurricane warning or tropical strom warning? i have been out and about today and it seems business as usual around here, im in south tampa, and noone seems worried..but could we be being complacent? Like the hurricane who cried wolf?

noah, we are currently under a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch extends from engelwood to suwanee which includes the tampa bay area. it could get rough or it could be somewhat of a non-event, i just prefer to err on the side of caution. but if the forecast track verifies we will definitely see power outages in the tampa bay area along the lines of what we had with frances, maybe a little worse.

get ready for the worst case scenario and then wait to see what the track looks like later today and this evening. right now you have some time so just use it to prepare and then wait to see what happens. if it looks like it's going to get bad just pack up and go to your neighbor's house if you're unsure about your house. honestly, i wouldn't think there would be any major structural damage to homes from this storm but it's always best to prepare for the worst. good luck and stay safe.

Noah,
I am not going to be the person to tell you should do nothing, and then find out later you suffered a tragedy. Personally, I've taken everything inside, made sure I have batteries and water, and brought my TV with me so I don't miss football on sunday (hoping the power won't go). That's about it.

I've lived here 6 years and Florida for 16, and I've been through many tropical storms (as well as Andrew). TS are a pain in the butt, but I've yet to see major damage done, although Frances was an exception, mostly due to the rain. If you have a safer place to go, then do it, but I wouldn't overreact to this.

And if the storm is curving early as has been suggested, we might not have any real problems in the bay area other than 2-4 in of rain and some strong winds. We could see some surge, but unless you live on the water, that's only going to be a driving inconvenience.

If you want a local perspective without hype, watch channel 28. They call it straight down the middle. All the news outlets should be this way.
