The GOES satellites run on solar power, and have a limited battery capacity. So for a couple of months around each equinox, when they are eclipsed by the Earth, there are a couple of hours each night of no imagery.

Good question ... I don't remember offhand, but I think it's round-about a month on each side of the equinox ... getting shorter the further from the equinox you get.

So... for that few hours period each night around the equinox
there is NO weather info from space ??

What about the ISS ??

I believe it lasts for a few weeks and during that there is no way to get satellite imagery.

This satellite "blackout," usually called a satellite eclipse.

It has been occurring between 11:45 PM and 2:45 AM Eastern (345Z to 645Z)... for those that didn't know.

so I could post this very question...
what time tonight is the satellite blackout ?

BUt the nice thing is we have radar..so we still will have a pretty good idea about what the eye is doing....bad thing is...obviously having radar means it's too close to where any of us want to see it :(

Does anyone know the link for the satelitte that isn't affected by the eclipse?

A couple of weeks ago someone posted about this satelitte. (If I remember correctly, they said the images were in B&W)
