No Power For 3 Weeks...

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Sun Sep 26, 2004 1:57 am

...possible for over 1 million people according to Channel 4 out of Miami. That's unbelievable. I find it hard to believe that power will be gone for that long for so many people. I hope it's not that long...this would be disastrous.

That is what they told the people in Pensacola before Ivan even made landfall. I think they have decided it is better to say 3 weeks and have things back up and running more quickly for most people than the opposite

They actually said "millions" of people. Wow. It's the big time.

My neighbor works for TECO (Tampa Electric Co.) and he said when your power goes out it will be out for a long time (could be 1-2 weeks! This is due to their emergency supplies are runng low from being used in Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and now Jeanne. Hurricane Jeanne will cause more wide spread outages than Frances did.

It is terrible to not have power but you learn to adapt. We did not have power here for 3 months after Andrew hit.

There are thousands in the Pensacola area that are still without power and it has been over 1-1/2 weeks. They told us that it coudl take up to two months before some got their power back.

The Power companies have had their resources streatched to the limit by FOUR hurricanes in one state. They were still working on lines from Charlie and Francis when Jeanne hit.

The local Power Company official said that Ivan "Destroyed in 8 hours what took them 80 years to build"

I work for a man who has been gone since right before Charley on hurricane electrical work. He left Missouri the day before Charley hit and has only been home once for 24 hours Labor Day weekend. Looks like he won't be home anytime soon. His wife had gone down the day after Ivan to NO for a convention and met up with him in Biloxi for a night. I can not imagine what it is like for the electric companies. Looks like they aren't going to get home before November if then.

As someone who's second "hobby," is his job (I'm a banker and economist)...I've been really watching the economy of Florida. This will definitely have ripple effects throughout the US and Florida will be dead-center of a terrible economic crisis for some time. Some aspects of the economy will be good---construction, clean-up, etc. However, a majority of the economy in Florida will be in a depression from ripple effects within from the tens of thousands that will lose their livelihoods over this. With that said, Florida will recover...just not overnight. It will take several years. Some will relocate to another state, but, a majority will likely stay, if they can.
