I see this forum is basically a hurricane forum as there are 3 full pages of topics with the last posts being sometime today(while us wx watch has 1 post today)! That is insane. I realize it's cane season and all and it's active, but just wondered how many out there prefer plains severe weather season when it's more active. I just don't get the hurricane rage now. You don't see any structure, just flooding and wind. And I really don't get the rage from so many not taking part in it. Just wondering though how many, if any, on here enjoy plains severe weather more. Also what is talked about when there aren't canes? With storm chasers it seems there is odd ball stuff to talk about all winter long. Anyway, thanks.

Guess you have never been through a hurricane. It's a phenominal force of nature. Hours upon hours of howling wind, watching your property being destroyed.
When winter comes around, alot of us southerners watch with envy as our northern friends experience blizzards, snowfall amouts etc.
We also watch out for our s2k family in the path of destructive tornados.
S2k always has some kind of weather to talk about but right now hurricane season has been extremely brutal to our friends and families in Florida.

Welcome to the boards, extreme instability, and awesome site (I've seen your site before) and US Weather Watch gets more active during the severe weather season, and during the winter as well (as well as the winter weather forum) ...
This board was founded two years as a haven for tropical weather enthusiasts initially since a good majority of the members are from the coastal regions ...
We do have a healthy number of members, though, from the Midwest as well and a core of storm (tornado) chasers as well, and during the spring time US Weather Watch gets a lot more active ...

Hey Mike ....I currently chase with Jim Leonard and Mike Theiss in the springtime...and I've been out with RJ and Charles too. The way you strongly feel about tornadoes is the same way these people feel about hurricanes. I get a thrill out of both but some people are inspired and engrossed by one over the other. Just think of how you get a rush out of tornadoes ...well it is the same for the hurricane gang here.

Cool. I guess I didn't mean to 'degrade' hurricanes, but more just wondering on the newness of this apparent surge in interest in it among people who just watch from home and those that get out there. I'm actually a wind freak, so I'd likley enjoy them. The amount of posts on here and other places in regards to hurricanes completely blows away severe posts on other forums, including stormtrack.org as far as I can tell. Probably more of a population correlation then anything I guess. Glad to hear there will be some decent severe weather chatter on this forum.

The severe weather chatter isn't as comprehensive as stormtrack.org, but there are several amateur chasers, as well as professionals ... we also have hurricanetrack.com (Mark Sudduth) and vacanechaser who post on this site on the hurricane side, and a couple of pros that also post on the US Weather Watch side as well ... and a slew of amateur storm chasers ...

When I lived in upstate NY, I was glued to the weather channel all winter watching potential snow storms come through. It was fun to wait and watch because the snow was so pretty and sometimes we got a day off of school! Only got snowed-in once, so they were never too scary to me.
When I first moved to FL, I tracked Hurricanes with the same fervor. A little afraid of the unknown then, but it wasn't until this year that I experienced the true fear of devastation brought by an impending Cat 4 (boy, were we lucky). Although by instinct I find it fun and interesting to track the Hurricanes, especially when they come close to this area (left over from the fun of watching snow storms), I now also have a healthy fear of them if they get too strong or too close. So it's part interest/part survival.
All in all, I think often the most interesting type of weather to a person is the type that might effect one's own region.
