Possible overnight tornados question...

#1 Postby chicagopizza » Mon Sep 27, 2004 12:04 am

What do you all do when there is a tornado watch at ungodly hours of the night? :) I certainly don't want to stay up tonight, but am a heavy sleeper and was just wondering what people do.

Francis kept us up most of the night with tornado warnings and am wondering if Jeanne will be different.

Well with hurricanes I just turn on the NWR and go to sleep. The tornado will porbaley already be on the ground by the time the warning is issued in tropical systems. Now if supercells or a squall line are moving in from Alabama I stay up because those are the fun ones.

Thanks for the info. Kinda wierd here. I'm used to daytime tornado watches/warnings. Sky turning that green color and hail. Is is different in this area than the midwest? I haven't heard of hail here at all.

I apologize if this is a stupid question. Just wondering.

Go to sleep. Just be sure you have shoes and a flashlight right by the bed, and know where you're going to run (inside bath or closet) if you wake up to crashing sounds.

Hey, there's the key, your dogs wouldn't let you sleep through a tornado, right?

BTW, your member name has just made me really hungry. I want Uno's right now!

Savannah doens't get many severe thunderstorms and usually the wet bulb zero level is not favorable for hail over coastal Georgia. The southeast is basicly part of tornado alley also, we don't get as many tornadoes but the Southeast leads in fatalities.

You learn something new every day. I had no idea about the hail, so thanks for explaining.

As for the threat of possible tornados, got a great night's sleep with no warnings at all. My dogs were not jumpy at all last night and I should have followed their lead.

It's so hard to believe my good luck. Let's just say I have gotten used to good luck followed by horrible events and get jumpy when things go very well. :)

Moral of the story:
This too shall pass really is true. Life can be pretty cruel sometimes, but, eventually, there is light at the end of the tunnel. It's getting used to seeing that light that takes some time.

here's hoping that everone affected by these hurricanes experiences the "light at the end of the tunnel" very soon. And when you get there, put your sunglasses on and enjoy!! You deserve it.

We go to bed...
sometimes leave TV on to local or TWC.
Don't have Warning radio, I think with the nature of tornadoes, here, its on us and gone before that warning is signififcant.

I usually try to stay awake and listen to reports on TV or radio. Also, I have a two-meter ham radio I listen to. Local hams are good weather spotters and trained to give reports. I've gotten more info from them at times than from listening to TWC, etc. I'm terrified of tornadoes, but the ones that spring up at night have to be the worst.

I agree...

I hate overnight tornado threats. My new combo is going to be my cb (has weather alert) and dogs. I may be a sound sleeper, but they are not once that beep goes off.

Either that or the weather radio, caffeine, and a great movie-"Best in Show" at 2 in the morning-"they used to call me loopy..." Never mind. :)

Sorry about all the repeats. Sheesh! My computer must've had the hiccups.
