Deaths

#1 Postby justlooking » Mon Sep 27, 2004 11:13 am

I found this on AP news. How can they blame a hurricane on some of these deaths? Surfing in a hurricane?? Strolling afterwards?? This is so sad!

"A man taking a post-Hurricane Jeanne stroll early Sunday was electrocuted after coming into contact with a hanging power line in The Roads section of Miami.
The victim was found dead near a bus bench at Southwest 29th Road and Third Avenue, said fire department spokesman Ignatius Carroll.
His death was among at least six across Florida during the passage of Hurricane Jeanne.
The man, believed to be in his 60s, had no identification.
Police said the man, probably curious to assess hurricane damage, was likely taking a stroll when he came across the power line.
''It appears as though he tried moving the wire away from the sidewalk,'' said Lt. Bill Schwartz, a Miami police spokesman. ``He probably grabbed ahold of [the line] and couldn't let go.''
Also Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for a surfer reported missing Saturday off 71st Street in Miami Beach as Jeanne was approaching.
A missing persons report never was filed for the surfer, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Gretchen Eddy.
A Boynton Beach couple apparently drowned after their SUV plunged into a 40-foot-deep canal along the Sawgrass Expressway in Coconut Creek. The accident may have occurred Saturday as tropical storm-force winds whipped up, though it was unclear if the crash was linked to Jeanne.
On Saturday, a trooper spotted skid marks on the grass and a chain-link fence down, but weather conditions were deteriorating at the time, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Santangelo.
Troopers returned to the scene Sunday and found the submerged car, a woman strapped in the passenger seat. A man's body was found hours later.
In Clay County, a 15-year-old boy was pinned by a falling tree Sunday and died at the scene, county officials told The Associated Press.
In Brevard County, a man was found dead Sunday in a ditch in Palm Bay. Barney Weiss, a police spokesman, told The Associated Press that the man apparently drowned after driving his pickup into the ditch.
Another Brevard County man was found dead Sunday after consuming a large amount of alcohol during a hurricane party, officials told The Associated Press.
Friends found the 60-year-old man lying in water after the house had flooded, said Gary Harrell, an investigator with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office."

The winds here in Clay County weren't too bad.

A lot of people thought it was okay to be out and about.
50MPH winds don't make most people take notice.

The tree fell on the kid in TS force winds.

Preventable? Yes.
Foolhardy..... Yes
But being bottled up inside when it is just light rain and medium winds will make a lot of people foolish enough to venture outside.

They are all associated with behavior that like-wise without Jeanne, would not have been fatal.
