Weather-wise, Which Storm was Worse?

#1 Postby tronbunny » Mon Sep 27, 2004 7:47 am

Anyone else notice the absolute rush to get back to normal today vs the last storms?
I'm actually still stunned from the force of this storm, and the new damage our home has suffered, but the rest of the world around us is acting like it was just an inconvenience!
This is weird, even with the addtional damages around town, there's still an atmosphere of "it never happened" and this is routine.

Charley was hoorendous, but quick.
Frances was slow, but weaker than expected.
Jeanne beat on us longer and harder, and made a bigger impression on me.

Please comment on your choice :-)

Sorry for the re-post, I lost Charley on the choices of last one.

From the other thread:

Ivan. Charley didn't affect me up here, Frances brought 2.5" of rain and 45 mph gusts. Jeanne is bringing me light rain as I type, but I'm just on the western fringes of the rain shield. With Ivan, I was on the bad east side, had 4" of rain(at least), 60 mph gusts and a tornado threat.

There we go, my choice is up now 8-)

I agree, it is a rather odd for folks to have plowed ahead so quickly. It has to be due to fatigue; we're all battle-weary and just want to feel normal again.

I chose Charley because of his intensity here. Frances and Jeanne were long and the winds were high, but Charley had me VERY scared - I'm glad he moved fast.

DEFINITELY JEANNE,EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SHORTER IN DURATION,THE
WINDS WERE STRONGER AND SUSTAINED HERE IN TAMPA.

OF COURSETHESE WERE EXITING STORMS WHERE ENTERING STORMS WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE SEVERE!

I have to go with Ivan ... While Charley was more intense at the point of landfall, Ivan's effect was much broader and extended far inland over many days.

If one considers the Carribean, then it's no contest.

I voted for Ivan meteorologically speaking, but in terms of overall human impact and suffering it would be Jeanne with Haiti!!

Personally it was Frances. My family in WPB went without power for 12 days, and I came within an inch or so of getting flooded at home. It took so long to go through that the anxiety level was off the charts.

Ivan -- he pestered me not once but TWICE! First by making landfall to the east of me, scaring the living crap out of me, then he came back as a TS landfalling to the west of me ...

I posted from what I experienced in my area. :)

Dade county didn't have serious effects from any of these storms, at least as I count "serious". But without question Frances had the most effect here - power outages and downed trees for the most part. Jeanne's south side eroded away very quickly as she came ashore (due to dry air, I think) or she might have had more effect.

On re-reading, I see that you are right. I misunderstood the question.

On that basis, it was certainly Frances here.

Definently Frances for Miami-Dade Co. Winds were stronger, more trees went down, took much longer to pass, the general anxiety levels were higher. Jeanne was more of an annoying inconvenience for us, not that I hear anyone down here complaining.

Frances caused more widespread power outages here in NE Florida.

While Jeanne did pelt us with higher winds, Frances had already done most of the damage.

A lot less people this time lost power, but for the most part, it was people who had power during Frances.

Im seeing more snakes from Jeanne though...

Jeanne was the storm for my immediate area. A wind gust to 62 mph was reported at 4:45pm yesterday afternoon at The Villages, Florida reporting station two to three miles from my home.

The station reports weather data (only a few weather conditions for some strange reason) every ten minutes (at 5, 25 and 45 past the hour)opposed to the majority of National Weather Service reporting stations that update every hour, usually at 52 or 53 past the hour.

Frances' peak wind gust reported at my location was 57 mph during the evening of Sunday, September 5th.

There were numerous power outages in this area with Frances. I am not sure how bad outages are with Jeanne in this immediate area. The lights only flickered here several times with both storms.

I barely got any rain and maybe a wind gust to 40 mph with Hurricane Charley, despite "only" being 45 miles NW of Orlando.

Almost a toss up between Frances and Jeanne but I voted for Jeanne. With Frances, power was out for 8 days, phone for 7 days, had to have 18 trees either cut down or pulled out of the yard. Had to leave the shutters up because we were still watching Ivan which made the house unbearably hot, filled with stale, stagnant air. Watched as the southern edge of the eye went over us. The event lasted about three days because she was so slow. Jeanne, on the other hand, lasted less than 12 hours but the winds were much more intense. Looks like only about 6 - 8 trees lost. But the flooding is just incredible. I walked out of my house Sunday morning and it looked like I was on an island. Water everywhere. All of the ponds had overflowed, the drainage canals and swales couldn't handle the amount of rain that feel in such a short period of time. Roads completely underwater. I could not get out of my driveway due to the water. People who have lived in the Farms for awhile were comparing it to the100 year storm we had in October, 1995 when we got almost 24 inches of rain in 24 hours. With that much water standing around, the mosquitoes will be unbearable soon.
