Storm-aholics admit your weakness

I will now be politically incorrect.

I'm tronbunny and I'm addicted to storm watching.
I am awed by nature and will enjoy, to an academic extent, the next one I experience.

Now, let me tell you-
Charley- now power for only 4 days, and now have a generator. thousands$ damage to home and car.
Frances- 2 days w/o power, thousands of $spent on plywood and other prep-cleanup for myself and elder Mother in Volusia (not to mention emotional and physical labor toll)
Jeanne- power out less than 18 hours, more roof damage, and many thousands$ of damage discovered due to wind-driven water into east-side of home!
I'm tired, but now have the attitude...
Bring it on Mother Nature, I'm prepared and not moving!

I admit that ever since I helped clean up after Andrew, I've been hooked.

I actually admire these things, and am amazed by the beauty of them. However, this has me feeling a bit guilty, and once they make landfall I can't watch for a few days. I don't like to think that I can admire something so terrible.

I feel a little lost today, there aren't any NHC updates to read, no projected path charts. For six weeks my life has revolved around 5:00am, 11:00am, 5:00pm and 11:00pm.

I don't know what to do with myself.

I worry that even though we're all exhausted and may even be suffering from post hurricane stress disorder that we'll miss the adrenalin rush of the storms. I really don't want another one to hit, FL, but.........

May just have to go stormwatching in the NW this winter. (or volcano watching) Yikes. I don't want to want more storms, but they are becoming the normal weekend event here.

LOL!!! So do I. I have to clean my room up today to get all the maps, charts, and papers off the floor. :lol:

Hi, this is cane (from Univ. of Miami, not the storms), and I'm addicted to storms as well. LOL

It's been exciting to keep up with this season so far, and I know that when we get to a "normal" 'cane season, it will seem like a let down after this one.

At least we all have each other to help work through our addictions and withdrawls LOL

The Twelve Steps of Hurricanes Anonymous

The relative success of the H.A. program seems to be due to the fact that an hurricane addict who no longer has hurricanes to track has an exceptional faculty for "reaching" and helping an a fellow hurricane addict that still monitors the tropics, even in off season, to redirect his efforts to the winter weather patterns.

In simplest form, the H.A. program operates when a recovered hurricane addict passes along the story of his or her own problem tropical tracking activities well after the official hurricane season has ended, describes the loss of adrenaline he or she has found in H.A., and invites the newcomer to direct his interest into winter weather tracking.

The heart of the suggested program of personal recovery is contained in Twelve Steps describing the experience of the earliest members of the Society:

1. We admitted we were powerless over Mother Nature and the adrenaline rush we get when we watch her handiwork. This makes our lives unmanageable because our lives revolve around weather bulletins at 10, 2, 5, and whether or not we can log onto S2K.

2. Came to believe that even Mother Nature cannot restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our weather watching options to the winter storm board and our world once again revolves around Mother Nature as we understand Her.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves and came to realize that there is no cure for H.A.

5. Admitted to our family @ S2K and to our families, if they are understanding, that we are truly addicts of Mother Nature; that we know that we are powerless once we see a computer mouse and know that the S2K board family is near. We know that these actions take away from our daily life as we knew it before becoming H.A.

6. We are NOT entirely ready to have all these defects of character removed from our lives and that we have the strength to watch only winter weather during the winter months and tropical weather during June through November each year.

7. Humbly have asked our family, friends for understanding and support.

8. Made a list of all persons on the board that share our addiction and promise to keep in touch with pms or instant messages. We have resolved to even keep in contact with those posters who we may not have agreed with, because those posters may be right next season with their predictions.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. (We do admit our limitations)

10. Continued to take personal inventory and begin rebuilding the damage if we were touched by the powerful hand of Mother Nature, say prayers of thanksgiving that we still have our lives and that we were not alone in our trials and tribulations from the storm.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our forecasting techniques for the next tropical season, how better to restock and be prepared should Mother Nature show her awesome power to us again this season or next; and resolve to quest for new weather knowledge for the next 6 months or so in winter weather forecasting.

12. Having had an adrenaline awakening as the result of these steps, we will try to carry this message to weather addicts and to practice during the winter months to moderate our total addiction to the tropics to include winter storms and to practice these principles for the next 12 months to come.

You weren't interested in the intermediate advisories when Tropical Storm and/or Hurricane Watches and Warnings were in affect, issued at 8:00am, 2:00pm, 8:00pm and 2:00am and then at 7:00am, 9:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 7:00pm, 9:00pm, 1:00am and 3:00am? :lol:

I will admit I enjoy tracking storms and wait anxiously on cane season. But now, I want this one to be over with. And now dread next season.

I find my self feeling sorry for the storm when it dies over land...I fined my self wenting to beat the 1995 record of name storms. I wake up on every Advisorys 5am,11am,2pm,5pm,11pm...It is just not the same for me if there is not a storm out there. I think I'm going to go nuts if something doe's not form....Because I know live my whole life around weather!!!
I feel sorry for all the people that have lost there homes in there lifes. But I know that it is not my doing...So I enjoy the power of our planet for what its worth...I love our Atmosphere in its weather...If you don't then your fooling your selfs...A thousand years from now people will never know what it was about. Because they will be living in domes or underground because they distroyed our Atmosphere.

They are awe inspiring, you can learn a lot about weather and geography as you track them, there is a lot of educational value from that aspect.

Then there's the real part, destruction, death, damage, that's not fun.

I admit it - I am powerless over my obsession with Mother Nature and her awesome fury and been since I was a child. I DON'T love the tragedy that can occur from it, but I DO love the storms for what they are, why they are and how they are. I also have a healthy respect and fear of them, especially tornadoes, since that is what we get here in the midwest. On the other hand, my canine critters would prefer it if we never had any storms (one tries to hide under my pillows).

I agree. It seems like every other weekend I have been tracking hurricanes and seeing if they are a threat. Its become kind of a tradition, and now I keep hoping for more development. Cant get myself out of S2k!
