Back Home in Cape Canaveral

#1 Postby SeaBrz_FL » Mon Sep 27, 2004 3:53 pm

Back home today and life is grand! No damage, full utilities (except cell phone which is giving an "Emergency Only" message). I evac'd a little further inland (42 miles) than I normally would have, but with an early landfall call for here and a possibility of a Cat 4 bomb, I chickened out. The downside of that is it took me almost two hours to drive home compared to a normal 45 minutes. However, I did honk and wave "thumbs up" greetings at all the lines of slow moving convoys of power, tree cutting, and fuel trucks moving their way east and south.

I haven't ventured far from home since returning, but I know there is much worse damage around -- especially to the beaches south of me.

I have evac'd to a hotel for two storms, and could write a book on the psychological situation of evacuees in a "shelter", but this time there were many Vero Beach/Port St Lucie residents at my hotel and it was simply heartbreaking to watch as many received calls late yesterday telling them that their homes no longer existed.

I realize how so very lucky I am sitting here in A/C entering this on my home Internet connection, and pray that everyone else in my county and state recovers very quickly. I also want to thank everyone on this forum for their posts this season. Some posts may seem petty and irritating, but getting different viewpoints and picking through the important stuff, has given me so much knowledge to guide my family safely through these storms.

Thanks much,
SeaBrz

Glad you are back and with no significant damage.

Always enjoy your posts.

News footage of Pt. St. Lucie and Vero Beach is heartbreaking!

Thanks to both of you. Persepone -- I'm going to write more after this season is over. I have so many, many stories to tell and this is cathartic for me. There is so much more than than just prepping and "riding out the storm" that non-hurricane people probably can't comprehend.

Hi SeaBrz

Happy to hear all is well at your house. We just got power back an hour ago here. HOT HOT HOT. It will take a whole day to cool this place down now.

We ended up hunkering down at home. My son and I did go to the BCC shelter, but... ewwwww.... it was too much. We decided to take our chances at the house. Lost a few more shingles and that's about it. The power and phone loss was the worst of it.

Looks like I can return to work tomorrow in Cape Canaveral, so that's cool too. We weren't so lucky with Frances.

Glad both of you are back home and safe!!! It is indeed heartbreaking to watch from afar as others are not so lucky as we are. I know many wish as I do that we could come over there and help make everything right again. Know that our prayers and thoughts are with you and all of your friends and neighbors that were not as lucky as you this time, indeed with al affected by Jeanne.
