We, here at Storm2K, are an educated and informed lot.
But, we have a lot of arguments about how powerful a landfalling 'cane is.
We argue about damage, windspeed (which for some reason is mis-understood) rain, etc.
It is my amateur opinion that the Saffir-Simpson needs either an overhaul or we need a new "yardstick" for hurricanes.
People no longer have much faith, now that so very many have more real-world experience.
I like our GHLS (Graphical Hurricane Local Statement)
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/jeanne/index.html
I'm wondering is there any effort to make this a standard(non-experimental), and could this be turned into a 2 or 3 level number that the public could use.
I know that intensity forecasting is a very "iffy" form of alchemy, but how about use in final analysis?
