I admit I love a storm. I think I stayed on the porch more than inside while it was raging. I did get scared when I heard the trees starting to groan and crack. What I really wanted to do was go outside and stand in the storm for awhile. It was difficult to resist, but I kept telling myself, act your age. :lol:

dhweather wrote:They are awe inspiring, you can learn a lot about weather and geography as you track them, there is a lot of educational value from that aspect.

Then there's the real part, destruction, death, damage, that's not fun. :(

AND... You can also learn a lot about people while you're at it. The sociological and psychological impressions provided via S2K are sometimes even more interesting than what the storm's doing at any particular time. Yet another interesting sideline to the addiction of storm watching!!

the horror most of you guys in Florida feel now will be changed to utter fascination in a few years. Just watch. Thats how the human mind works. It is fascinated by what it cannot fathom. Yes people die in storms, and property is destroyed, but theres just something about several trillion horsepowers worth of energy formed into a gigantc rotating heat machine hundreds of miles wide, formed from the same air that you and I are breathing now, and hyte water you drink...is that not incredible?

my name is greeng13 (pseudonym) and i am a hurricane/storm 2k addict...it has been exactly 5 minutes since my last fix...i think about storms all the time (especially this year and since i now have a cable modem)...these wonders of nature have made me stay up late at night and neglect my animals and girlfriend...i also tend to hype up the possibility of such events affecting myself and those around me...now that i am "depressed" tropically speaking..i will try to focus on those other hobbies that used to provide me with so much joy and comfort such as watching home improvement shows vs. TWC and....

aw hell! i'll stay an addict...rehab is for quitters anyway! lol

I'm a generalized disaster addict. It began when I survived an F4 as a child. I suppose, if I were sane, an F4 would have frightened me off disasters, and it did frighten me, sort of, enough to get that "incomprehensibly powerful force that could wreck my neighborhood like it was made of cardboard" adrenaline rush. And so I was hooked for life. I went on to even get myself paid to obsess on disasters.

I didn't pay much attention to the tropics until I discovered that the tropical weather fix lasts a lot longer than, say, an overturned tanker truck. With tropical weather, a fix can last weeks. And now, though I'm no longer financially supported to pursue my habit, and Vermont need fear no hurricane (hurricane remnants, yes -- I'll never forget Hurricane Flood, er Floyd -- but not live 'canes) I study every wave in the satellite pics, looking for development.

And let me admit my deepest depravity: I even check the waves outside of the official season. Just in case :lol:

OH good!!!I'm not alone!!!
When Charley was coming, we were in a grocery store and my 5yr.old blurted out to the guy in the next line over that her mommy loves storms. Needless to say, everyone looked at me and I wanted to crawl under a table.
I lived in Miami for Andrew and I love the howl of the wind and watching the trees sway and bend. I wish that there were no hurricanes because of the destruction they cause, it really breaks my heart. I was giving out food and water after Charley and it was awful. But there are storms, I just wish they'd hit me. Frances was too weak when it hit and Jeanne was a little better. I did panic with Charley b/c my family lives in Englewood two blocks from the bay, 2story wood frame house with vinyl siding, and my father never boards up or evacuates. I was in a total panic and my poor sister, who does not share my enthusiasm for storms, had to take a Zanex and pass out. I would have been devestated to lose my niece or nephew or mom,dad or sister.
If we get another storm, I hope it does not go to Vero Bch,Pensacola, or Punta Gorda.
The most annoying thing is getting excited and ready and then the storm goes somewhere else. I acutally can't afford to get too ready, I have no $.I will say that I am very tired now. But we still have two months to go.

Ah! Soulmates! I feel guilty as heck about my hurricane mania, esp. since I live in New Orleans, and we're a sitting duck for one if it comes this way. But I've loved stroms since I was little. I figure Nature will have her way with us, and there's nothing to do about it, but watch and hope you don't get hurt!

When there's violent weather, I'm on the porch or looking out the window at the wind and rain. I remember wishing for hurricanes when i was younger, though I've learned to temper my enthusiasm a bit now that I"m older and have property and lives to worry about. But I still, guiltily, long for a glancing blow from a cane now and then. I've got a reputation at work. People come to me for the storm updates, but when a storm really threatens to come here, I get these looks and sometimes a comment like, Well, I guess you're happy now!" As if I caused it!

I do feel a bit of a letdown since Jeanne. I'm almost ashamed to say I'm eagerly watching the threads about 'something to the south' possibly forming. :lol: :lol:

I'm with you folks.......

You all are toooooooo much! I have to much now (wife, 6 children, home, business, elderly mother and disabled sister) to want to be in the direct path of a cat 3,4,5 whereas in most cases a 1 or 2 would do just fine,

It is incredible, fascinating, unimaginable, awe inspiring and they are without a doubt a marvelous and beautiful thing to behold.

Job 37:11-13

11
"Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud;
He disperses the cloud of His lightning.
12
"It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,
That it may do whatever He commands it
On the face of the inhabited earth.
13
"Whether for correction, or for His world,
Or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen.
...............

24
"Therefore men fear Him;
He does not regard any who are wise of heart."

Wow I didn't know there were so many twisted like me :D ! I have to admit I love hurricanes and always track them, but really only pay attention to the ones that might affect Florida. I have to admit I get dissapointed when all the hype builds up and we get our shutters and miss school and then the hurricane misses us. I guess I should feel "lucky" that my area got cane'd twice this year, but Frances wasn't all that powerful for my area, and Jeanne I had to go to Miami so I could'nt hear the winds roaring and the house shaking. Those just give me an incredible adrenaline rush and feeling of awe I can't get out of anything else. Now that I have experienced a hurricane, even with the inconveniances and power out, they still are exciting. I just feel horrible sometimes being like this with so many people's lives being destroyed or altered. I wish everyone had homes as strong or stronger than my home so noone would get hurt.

I hate storms, I despise them. I don't understand people who love them or want them to come toward them. I think this is crazy. (Sorry!) I guess I have too much at stake now, with three properties 1/2 mile from the Gulf and across the street from a bay, and an 81 year old "special needs" Mom who is in an evac. zone.

BUT...I am addicted to learning about them. The science behind them fascinates me, and I enjoy reading and talking about them.

Even though I had some misery during 11 days powerless during Charley.. BRING THEM ON..

I love storms and I love hearing the ferocious howl of the wind..

I have experienced 4 hurricanes {3 this year alone}

Wow!!! So good to hear that there are others just as crazy as I am about storms. Yes, they are scary but wow!!!! Just amazing. Feeling very bored right nowbut constantly looking on storm2k for "new invest" post.

I too spent most of my time over the weekend on the porch watching the wind driven rain and trees sway, almost smiling, kinda sick ain't it. 8-)

My favorite storms of all time were actually TS's not canes..

Josephine in 1996 of course and
Gabrielle in 2001

I rode my bike to school during Josephine in 1996 and actually went out and walked around during Gabrielle..

Ahhh, Erin.

She was pretty, without all the nastiness Jeanne had for us.

Yes, we have an incredible deisre to understand these magnificent forces of nature.
There must be a spiritual component to this.
I, for one, am grateful that we humans have no control, because I feel that we are so imperfect as to "screw-up"
And it is a re-affirmation of my faith in The Higher Power.
Doc gave us a fantastic reference to the Book of Job!

Now, let's demonstrate that we are beings with compassion for eachother.

I am with Innotech, who wishes that all homes were as sturdy to survive these storms, so many more can appreciate, without peril, that..
God, is indeed, in charge.

(and every now and then, He lets us peek into the workings of His plans)
