EXPERIMENTAL STORM REPORT
HURRICANE JEANNE
NJN WEATHER CENTER
120PM TUES SEPT 28TH 2004
Hurricane Jeanne bruised and battered Central Florida, especially in the counties of Brevard, Indian River, Martin, St Lucie, Okechobee and Osceola. The northern counties were also slammed but damage was minimal compared to the coast.
Jeanne made landfall as a moderate Cat 3 with winds of 120 mph. My original forecast had her making the sharp north turn over Osceola County and making a path of destruction through Kissimmee/St Cloud and Orlando. The turn did not occur till well past that. Jeanne may have even brought some hurricane force winds to Tampa.
Damage is light to moderate here inland. The notables such as trees down, signs getting blown out or shingles flying off roofs occured. 1 of my neighbors who just had a new roof installed on Friday actually lost his entire roof AGAIN.
Osceola's EOC reported the counties top wind gust was only 81 mph. I don't buy that. The storm was still a Cat 1.. maybe even minimal Cat 2 when he went through the southern part of the county. You take the 80-85 mph winds.. plus the fact that the storm was moving between 10-15 mph and that would make the top wind gust near 100 mph I believe.
Most of KUA's power is back on. But anyone with OUC or FPL might still be in the dark. The fragile power grid took a hit from this storm.
Jeanne was the 3rd hurricane to hit Osceola County since 8/13. She may have also been the strongest. The cleanup may take weeks, but patience is the key.
The only question now is.. can we get a break..?

Well, J'phine, I'm still only about 1/2 way through my crow eating sandwich. I'm one of the ones who simply did not believe that Jeanne would come West and strike Florida.
The good news that in Central Florida, most of the trees that were going to get blown over were already gone. I didn't see very much debris at all this time.
Too bad about your neighbors roof.
I'd get a better roofer this next time !!!!
