Is it actually possible for a storm to do that kind of thing?

Believe me it is possible, about as possible, as that hurricane we saw in March...

I would not be surprized if Lisa, moved up to 40 north/20 west. Then made a loop through the Atlantic...Ended up at 10 north/60 west moving through the Caribbean as a cat3 hurricane. I also would not be surprized if this hurricane hit Florida...

It hasn't happened ... Lenny was the only storm of record to traverse from West to East across the Caribbean..

To give you an idea of just how difficult to almost meteorlogically impossible, the Azores High (semi-permanent feature in the ATL) is one factor, which produces the low-level easterlies (tradewinds).

Second, for a storm to loop back into Africa, it would encounter a very cold current of SST's off the Northern African Coast (in the NW portion where SST's are commonly below 70ºF all year round due to the northerly ocean current, much like off the U.S. Pacific Coast ...

To get a trough that can dig down deep enough to catch one just forming, the system would get sheared apart, and if somehow it could survive that, the cold SST's would get it ...

It didn't loop back as a hurricane, but didn't someone earlier say that Jeanne was actually Frances (or the same low?)
