Retired Hurricane Names
I did some research on retired hurricane names since 1974 & got the
following:
Since 1974:
--------------
1. 19 names have been either retired or removed. Georges(1998) is not on
the retired list but was not on this year's list.
2. 1995-4 names were retired. Most of any year in this period of time
3. This year's list: Since 1974, the list has changed 6 TIMES.
Gone Are: Allen, Andrew, Carmen, Fifi, Georges & Mitch
Incredible as this is going to sound, the 2004 list is TIED with the list from 2001 for most names removed with 6!
The retired list from the 2001 list included Hugo & Opal.

I think it also included Alicia (1983).

The current lists are on 6-year rotations beginning in 1979. Prior to 1979, other lists served the purpose of naming hurricanes.
Furthermore, it MUST be more than 19 as since 1995:
1995- 4 Names (Luis, Marilyn, Opal, Roxanne)
1996- 3 Names (Cesar, Fran, Hortense)
1998- 2 Names (Georges, Mitch)
1999- 2 Names (Floyd, Lenny)
2000- 1 Name (Keith)
2001- 3 Names (Allison, Iris, Michelle)
2002- 2 Names (Isidore, Lili)
2003- 3 Names (Fabian, Isabel, Juan)
Total 1995-2003: 20
Georges was obviously retired due to the track over most of the Greater Antilles resulting in 650+ deaths, and the major hurricane strike on Puerto Rico in addition to the devastation it caused in Key West and the Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida gulf coasts.
Not including 2004 which will most likely have at least 4 names retired (Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne)

Good to see someone else keeping up! I was comparing our lists. I didn't have 1959's Gracie down, but you are missing 1968's Edna and 1974's Fifi.

Some sources don't have Gracie, some do ... some sources don't have Edna and Fifi, either ... it really depends on what source you use ...
this was the one that I used .. from AOML ...
And even they didn't have Gracie on the list ...

What is somewhat disturbing about the list is the amount of storms that have been retired over the last 9 years...
From 1954 to 94 (40)yrs.... There were only 37 retired.....
From 1995 to 04 (9) yrs.....There are 24 that have been retired...
*Note I included the four from this year that will surely be retired*
Is this evidence that we have entered the era of more majors making landfall as Dr.Gray and others have forecasted?
This could also be a sign of the continued rising population of coastal waters and the impact of hurricanes causing more personal/property loss...
Let's be honest here...As horrific as this season has been I am starting to think that not only our coastal waters but also those inland that are effected could not take another 10-20 yrs of this "era" of major landfalling hurricanes...The people of Florida can tell you that....Eventually "Big Brother" would get involved and limit coastal building projects IMO....As much as we can continue to improve the building codes we can not limit the strength of the hurricanes especially if we get into a phase of major landfalls as we have seen this year..
I may be way off here as we may not see anything like this year in our lifetime...Lets hope that is what happens...But I also fear would may be upon us in the future if this is just a start of a pattern of major landfalling hurricanes in the U.S.

Amazing that Allison was only a Tropical Storm and it was retired! That was the costliest TS I've ever seen.
I was wondering if they would actually retire Allison.
No doubt that the four Florida Hurricanes will be retired. Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne will go down in History that's for sure!

others that could of been retired in the past but were not include
1979 Texas(Claudette) $400 Million and was just a T.S
1985 Louisiana/Texas (Juan) $1.5 Billion
1989 Texas (Allison) $500 Million
1993 Central America (Gert) 76 deaths
1994 Florida/Alabama/Georgia (Alberto) $500 Million
1994 Caribbean (Gordon) 1145 deaths.
I know some of these names have since been retired but some of them could of been retired earlier than they were
