Winter weather vs Hurricanes

#1 Postby tronbunny » Wed Sep 29, 2004 11:39 am

The worst winters I can remember in FL are early 1980's and 1989 in particular.
One heckuva march storm in 1993, I think.

1989 brought us Hugo, with Texas taking Allison, Chantal and Jerry.
But only Danielle and Earl for 1992.

Please feel free to correct and educate me, I'm here for my beating

March 1993 was the big superstorm that brought Florida a serious severe weather outlook(feet of snow all the way down into Alabama and Georgia and up the East Coast).

I've noticed some correlations... August 1992 was Andrew.

Hey Brent,

I found an excellent site with some winter wx study.
If anyone wants to, we can compile some observations that correlate to tropical seasons prior, or post.

http://www.comet.ucar.edu/resources/cases/winter_wx.htm

Right now, I've found reference to "explosive cyclogenesis" in January of 2000, which may relate to the 1999 tropical season

Remember that storm well as do most people who live anywhere along the east coast. It was a "surprise' storm-March 13th-"The Storm of the Century". We had relatives from the NE visiting plus a huge wedding outdoor to attend. YUP, it hit on a weekend too!!!! All went off fairly but I can't say without a hitch-we made do with what we had and it was fun if not totally weird.

Locally, we woke up on Saturday to some minor wind damage with not too much rain and watched as the entire east coast got socked in with major snow accumulations. Obviously the relatives got in a few extra vacation days until things cleared out at home.

I remember parts of it. I was 4 at the time and my mom was pregnant with my sister. The rain changed to snow Friday Afternoon and became very heavy and started accumulating a little after dark. It snowed all night and ended by noon on Saturday. Ended up with 13".

Winter weather is what got me all hooked up on weather in the first place so even if it is not as popular as hurricane season, it will always have a warm spot in my heart. I always used to watch TWC and their weekly planner and hoped that a strong cold front would come down from Canada and give us cold enough weather here in South Florida to make it snow. That was in 1995. Hasnt happened in my 9 years of weather love.

the 1993 superstorm was easily one of the most well-forecasted and obvious storms, also. it was a lock from 3 days beforehand when basically every model was in agreement on bombogenesis in/near the gulf. thank goodness for our wonderful models, although unfortunately they don't operate quite as well with tropical systems. what a storm it was... i was about 15 at the time, my area in s new england recieved 15-16" of snow, thunder, 3" of sleet, 1/2" of rain, and 70mph windgusts!!

I think we might have a cold winter down here in Texas... We have been getting some pretty unusual cold fronts pushing all the way through Houston in August! I remember that week in August when we had lows in the 60' at night... That is completely bizarre!! I don't know, but thats what I am thinking right about now... I wouldn't mind having some winter weather here, I forgot what it looks like!

:D 8-) :P :) :D 8-) :) :P

i hear ya, about missing the snow. and the seasons. only 2 seasons down there in TX- mild and hot. hehe.

sure its neat after the first snowstorm of the season- but then it gets old fast...at least I think so. well when i move to beaumont early this spring I will FORGET about the winter misery and never look back. it's 51 right now, wind is 30-50mph and I want to jump ship already. hehe.

Since I'm feeling rather egocentric right now...and short sighted about anywhere else but Florida...
I'm going out on a limb.
And trashing anymore of my doom and gloom about a lousy Florida winter.
According to our local NWS office and studies on climatology, we have a weak ElNino. A strong ElNino does bring more winter storminess, but also little to no chance of deep freeze.
So with a weak ElNino, I'll say we'll have a bitt of extra storminess, lot's of rather cool/cold days, but similar to last winter, no freeze threats.

Some of people are lucky. I wish it would snow once where I live, but thats impossible. It can never snow where I live.

Okay, I'll bite ESF. Why will it never snow in your location?

Ahhhh, the Superstorm. What can I say, it was one of the all-time greats. I remember watching the models and forecasts from nearly 5 days out predicting this storm and I was more than a little doubtful. After all, the temperatures in Meridian at the time were in the 60s for daytime maxs....typical March wx. I found out that the forecasts were dead on, it was an incredible experience this far south. 8 inches at my house in Meridian.

A friend of mine at Mobile-NWS kept calling Birmingham, asking about the possibility of snow....it was 35F with a steady rain. Birmingham kept stating "No way, no chance." He kept calling because another meteorologist in Birmingham made a smug bet about the chances for snow in Mobile. What do you think happened a couple of hours later?? Yep, the temp fell a couple of more degrees (and kept falling) and snow was the result. hehehehe, that guy lost that bet! It was definetely a storm to remember.
