What did we do BEFORE computers?

#1 Postby azsnowman » Wed Sep 29, 2004 10:31 pm

FINALLY, I'm BACK online, SOMEONE (a person in my SAR Unit :grr: ) sent me a VIRUS last week, if I didn't know any better, I'd SWEAR this WOMAN sent it to me on purpose! ANYWAYS........I had to have the hard drive re formated, I also had to have them install Windows XP and Office Pro 2003 for my school work! Bottom line, I had NO computer to check the emails, the weather this morning, I was going NUTZ..........I mean, GESSSSSH, am I REALLY that addicted to the stupid machine? I MUST be, plus I went through BIG TIME withdrawls from Storm2K!

What did we USED to do BEFORE comps to take up our time?

I can't remember. :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who wants to just go away and die when the computer's messed up.

I agree 100% and I would have said the same exact thing so that is why I quoted your post. :)

For most of the time I was in school (from 1984 to 1996)... for the three years before not having daily internet access I didn't do too much... played solitaire and watched TWC quite a bit.

I would truly be lost if the internet didn't exist or if I had no access at all.

Let's see, that's fairly easy to say.

I read books, like others.

I read and subscribed to the ACTUAL newspaper, not the online version.

I had a neater house.

If somone had asked me - do you google - I would said oh no, I don't know THAT dance. LOL

I had a weed free yard.

I looked up recipes in my cookbooks or at the library, not online!

I didn't have sore eyes!!!!

Side note Dennis, if you ever need a new computer, consider buying Apple/McIntosh. We've never had a virus, since they're designed for other computers. Everytime I hear of another virus alert, I ask Jim about it and he always says, with a smile mind you, we don't have to worry about it.

I've got Norton, I even updated to Norton '04 but the I STILL got the virus! Talked to the tech at the shop, said the virus was OVER 10 years OLD??? I asked the *woman* who SENT me the virus, she said "Yeah, it's a hand me down computer, over 11 years OLD!" So...anyway!

YUP...I used to read a LOT and I "HAVE" to now, with school and all "LOL!"

well since my computer time is the same as work, my answer is easy.

Before computers I leaned over a drafting board for 8 hours a day. I used pencils, adjustable triangles, scales, calculators, and plenty of erasers.

Ahhhhhh...the good ole days NOT!

j !!! Doing Cadd!!!

What line of work are you in? I'm a civil engineer. We're up to our armpits in Cadd around here.

I loved those plastic leads. I miss the buzz of pen cleaners. The tape on the triangles so the ink doesn't run under it. I especially miss the artistry of hand lettering. The old time drafters knew how to DRAW. They also know that a hidden line must be interrupted and must not actually touch an object line. I can't get that through to the kids that come out of tech school today. They don't even know what a hidden line is.

yeah...I din't mean to knock it. I was actually quite a good draftsman, with my drawings standing out from my co-workers. Yes...your drawings had to legible. A 3 better not look like an 8 or your screwed! That is basically gone with Cad.

I'm a Senior Designer (mechanical). Been on Cad since 1986. Been using Solidworks solely since 1999.

Ed, even though I much prefer the CADD, you are so right about the newer "kids" that do not understand "drawing".

Before Computer's

1. I had to use pen or pencil and paper
2. To use Windows I had to turn the latch and open by hand
3. If I had a mouse problem I would set a trap
4. If I had a virus I ran a fever
5. If I needed to reboot I bought a new pair of shoes
6. To Download something you went to the bathroom
7. If you want Weather info you had to wait for the local news to ome on

I was the "catalog queen". Noooo, I did NOT
always order, but, in essence, I "window-shopped"
through catalogs from every place on Earth! My
late-morning coffee (I worked 3p-11p shift)
was spent drinking coffee and wishing I could
order things....I also did alot of drawings and
oil paintings. I still have sketch pads where I
started drawings, and, never finished them.
I still get catalogs, but, they get pitched into the
trash bin a lot faster than they used to.

I would handwrite assignments, look for activities to consume my time. We didn't get a puter til my senior year, and by then didn't have internet at that time.

lol Kathy :P

I started out with a dinosaur-like dial up modem. The thing would be considered archaic in today's age of cable / DSL / T1 modem homes and businesses.

It ran at a measly 2.4 KB per second. :( Could never download anything on that sucker nowadays. :P
