I think they will retire all four, as well. These were all devastating hurricanes and will go down in history. That is the purpose of retiring names---they've earned retirement (unfortunately). Goodbye, Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne...

What if they decided not to retire a name that a lot of people felt should be retired? Does the average person have a say in any of it? Can those affected by the hurricane fight to have the name retired?

all 4 will be very costly.

if just 1 of the 4 is not retired

they can join the list of mysterious non retirements

i.e

Gordon 1994

where we can talk about it over the next 6 years or so.

They retire names to avoid confusion when talking about historical hurricanes. I think all 4 names will be retired.

All four will be retired, IMO.
As for whether Jeanne or Ivan was stronger at landfall, I don't think it matters to the residents of the barrier islands that no longer have homes.

I heard that Pensacola Beach residents are now being allowed access only on Sundays from 8am-5pm for the foreseeable future, which could be as long as 6 months. They are not allowed to drive to thier homes and are not allowed to take any belongings they cannot carry on the buses. It is not a pretty picture and is will be a dangerous environment while the attempt to get basic services of water, sewer, and electricity going.

I believe Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne will be retired.

They were all Cat3 or stronger Hurricanes.

Sorry HurricaneBill-but the damage here proves otherwise.

Ivan was a CAT 3/4 at landfall. I've been in a few Hurricanes and none of them had the winds that Ivan had!

You all can come here and survey the damage yourself......

I hope all 4 are. Gaston probably won't. I don't think it affected a wide enough area. Yes, it did cause a lot of damage, but it was somewhat localized. It could go either way. The others? They all better be retired...

Ivan's pressure was lower than Charley, Frances, and Jeanne at landfall.

Pressures at landfall:

Charley: 941 MB
Frances: 960 MB
Ivan: 943 MB
Jeanne: 953 MB

Nevertheless, there is no doubt in my mind that Ivan was the second most intense at landfall....possibly second most destructive as I don't believe there has yet been an accurate account of damage in Gulf Breeze (Soundside, Santa Rosa Shores, Bay Street, Villa Venyce, Soundview Trail, Deerpoint, and Peake's Point), Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, and Grand Lagoon. All of these areas have had severe to catastrophic devastation and have not yet had monetary damages accurately noted.
