I think the Scifi channel could have waited until winter to show Maximum Volocity about a 500 kt. hurricane.

Because floridians and those hit by the recent storms are sensitive.. but hey the weather channel shows storm stories about hurricanes and rising waters in between the actual weather and hurricanes were happening then too.. so go figure.. the media is money folks. :roll:

I'm a Floridian and I find Storm Stories very interesting. I guess I am the exception to the rule I am not sensitive to any Storm related stories on TV, I find them very interesting : )

Central pressure down to 621 mb!

It's a 500 mph hurricane!!! And they're going to break it up with a giant sea achor that emits an ion stream towed behind a 747!!! And there's only one hour before it hits the East coast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you say "Hollywooooooooooood!"

It's fiction - as in Science Fiction - a Hollywood movie... On the SciFi Channel.

I haven't seen this show on Sci-Fi, but this is obviously not a true documentary of an actual event, but a docu-drama style creation of Hollywood.

If this is just a dramatization, then I'd say the Sci-Fi channel is guilty of being insensitive to those in the SE USA (and other areas of the world) that have been pummeled by Hurricanes this year, and they are out of line.

If this were a documentary of an actual event, I could be perhaps more understanding, but if they are just dramatizing, then they are playing on people's emotions, fears and misfortunes for ratings. THAT is not OK with me.

Try to remember that the only part of the world directly affected by these storms are those in the Islands, the Caribbean, and the SE United States. SciFi brodcasts its signal around the world to way more than those encompassed by this year's tropical events.

When your parents have had their house beaten to shreds by 3 hurricanes in 6 weeks, and ended up surrounded by water that threatens what is left of their home, let me know.

My parents spent $285.00/hour from 10 am to 12MN yesterday to pump 110,000 gallons of water from their yard--to prevent their house from being destroyed. All of this is at THEIR COST...they are not insured for floods and until this season saw no need to take out flood insurance. You do the math on just the pumper trucks alone (not counting actual structural damage or the 8 foot privacy fence that is now somewhere else).

Now...before you hop up on your sanctimonious and self-righteous pedestal, they are INLAND in Central Florida. Their house does NOT front an ocean, a lake or a river. They are INLAND.

They've received 40 inches of rain in 50 days. This is the retirement home they worked HARD for over 45 years of marriage. They are retired and on a fixed income, but they don't expect others to bail them out of their situation. However, they also don't have 20 years to recover from the devastating financial impact these storms have had on them, their lives and their home.

When that has happened to you and yours in NC, get back to me...so I can pile on the sensitivity in your same style.

I don't honestly know what a movie about such an unrealistic hurricane would upset anyone. It's sheer fantasy...the most intense tropical cyclones of record were in the 160-165 kt range. I personally believe the 1935 Labor Day hurricane might have possessed sustained 175 kt winds at landfall in the Florida Keys...but ONLY because it was such a small, tight-knit eyewall (about the size of Charley).

This movie about a 500 kt hurricane is as farfetched as the "10.5" earthquake movie last spring. It's too unbelievable to be scary...

If I lived in Florida, a movie about a large 130 kt hurricane slamming into Miami/ Fort Lauderdale would be far more stressful...because it has happened, and can happen again. A "500 kt/ 621 mb" sci-fi hurricane will not.

I survived a damaging tornado at age 12....and the most frightening tornado-related movies I've seen since weren't Twister or Atomic Twister. It was an old video titled "Day of the Killer Tornadoes"; and the reason it was so scary? Because it really happened...on April 3, 1974.

I live in Cape Coral ,20 miles from ground Zero in Punta Gorda, but I still don't think it's wrong to air a movie...I mean, it's a free world, you don't have to watch it if your don;t want to...right?

Of course, the main plot is about a serial killer, not the storm, but still....

uh might want to watch the news some... All of those storms caused massive floods in the carolinas and virginia...

and psssssssss... i know what the damages are in central florida, I have been in lakeland to Daytona down to west palm beach... and staying in south orlando... <--- 3 times eh... been here since the day aftert charlie

That's why there's more than one channel on TV. There's a little button on your remote control that actually allows you to change the channel!

That is the best method to use - if you don't like what's on, change the channel.

And if you can't distinguish between "sci-fi" and reality, you've been watching too much tv anyway.

On TLC (The Learning Channel) they had a special about Charley, Ivan and Frances. I was actually looking forward to watching it but it was on Sunday, Sept. 19th @ 10 pm., the day Jeanne hit and I had no power by then. They should have waited a few weeks and they could have included Jeanne. Watching those types of programs are informative and give me a different persepctive on things. Just like the difference between living on the coast vs inland during a hurricane. The threats are different in a lot of ways but we all experience the same hurricane.

Not only can you change the channel, you can turn it OFF! Read a good book, spend time with the family, take the dog for a walk........Many better things to do than watch ridiculous shows on TV.
