Hurricane Hunters - New Planes, Fewer Crew Members

#1 Postby Ixolib » Sat Oct 02, 2004 10:22 pm

By the looks of this article, economy may begin to impact performance???

Some Hurricane Hunters have lost their jobs to computer systems in the new airplane, which has a computer that takes the place of the flight engineer and does much of the navigator's work.

Two critical equipment shortfalls have kept the Hurricane Hunters from using the J-model routinely in storms. The radar was designed to help the aircraft avoid bad weather, while the Hurricane Hunters need a radar that can see through storms. And the lighter, six-bladed composite propellers receive damage when flown through hail, which is sometimes necessary for Hurricane Hunters.
