$1.79 on the east end. Not sure about Race Trac out where the causeway starts -- it's usually the cheapest place to fill up on the island.

Just a side note. I remember when the highest gas prices were under a dollar was one of the first thoughts that crossed my mind when I read this thread. I am officially my grandmother!! :)

You know, I find it ironic that the gas prices are going up again. Major oil companies blame it on the price of crude, etc. Now putting my college education to work here, common sense would tell me that if it was costing the oil companies more per gallon to put gasoline on the street, then their profits would suffer. To combat that, they would raise the price to the consumer, us, to keep pace. Funny thing is, they are setting record profits each quarter. To do that, they have to raise the prices far more than necessary. Another thing, notice how the gas prices go up immediately based on whatever cause they give us that day, but come down very slowly, and never back to what it was before. This is a slow, systematic way to condition us to higher prices. Heck, it's already happened, if I found gas for $1.75 a gallon, I would think it was cheap. Mark my words, the escallation of gas prices will continue, as well as the net profits of the major oil companies, while we get fleeced.

What we need is a major independent oil company to start up and be willing to make a reasonable profit per gallon. If this were to happen, you would be amazed how much lower they would sell a gallon of gasoline for. Of course, the major oil companies would never ever allow that to happen. The fuel market is rift with price fixing, gouging, and collusion, while the government turns a blind eye.

Okay, enough of that rant :D

Very well said and i agree 100%. Example here where i live its all about timming. Usually every Thursday evening or early Friday (Payday ofcourse) Gas goes up everywhere and usually by about 20 cents or so. Suprisngly not everyone pulled it this week. Some places its 1.78 and others (Especially along i94) its at 1.90 or so for the cheap stuff right now.
BTW I remember back in late 80s when gas was .69 cents a gallon!

I remember when gas was 15 cents a gallon and you got your windows cleaned, oil checked, and tires checked. One station gave away beautiful pieces of decorative glassware. Another station gave away tickets to an amusement park with rides. I'm old as dirt.
