What is the highest temperatyure possible for a frost?

#1 Postby Guest » Sun Oct 03, 2004 7:54 am

I was just wondering about this. Even here in Northern Virginia we are supposed to get into the mid/upper 30's Monday Night. Can it frost at 37/38?

There can be frost when it is in the lower 40's...as measured by a thermometer some 1-2 meters off the ground. Traditional thermometers (at NWS stations and all the other reporting stations) are generally 2 m from the ground...it is often colder at the immediate surface. As long as it is near or below freezing where the plants are, you can have frost. Under idealized radiational cooling there can be some pretty intense lapse rates near the surface...think about those days in the spring where we have a deep snowpack...as warm air advection comes in, the air near our heads can be in the 50's, while at the surface it is still near freezing.
