That was the Hegben Lake Earthquake near West Yellowstone in MT. It was MM7+ and occurred in 1959. It was, however, tectonic and not magmatic in origin. However, it did affect some of the geysers in Yellowstone. The textbook I have on Vulcanology mentions Yellowstone and also the Long Valley Caldera but the real threat posed by Supervolcanoes has just recently been realized as more studies are made about them. They are characterized by very long repose times between eruptions and exceptionally violent eruptions. Such have occurred in the past and it would be stupid to think that they can't occur again-the question is basically when. Probably not in the immediate (say 1-10000 years) future but soon on a geological timescale.

Ok here is something more about the Volcano/attack?

Super volcano, asteroid hit, super tsunami, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, snake bite, killer bees, lightning, terrorist attack, WMD's, sniper killing, traffic accident, falling in the bathtub, or domestic dispute.
One thing's for certain - life is fatal. Doesn't matter how you go and we don't know when it'll be. What's important is how you live your life while you've got it.

I'm trying to give information to people about what is out there? Is that wrong???
I'm just wondering why so much info on a volcano is ending up in a forum designed for discussions on tropical weather? Yeah, I know, I don't "have" to click the link......
This is the Off Topic Forum, at Storm2K - a weather board. If we are truly indeed only a Tropical Board now, someone please tell me!!!
If I post about a winter snowstorm will you be reminding us that this is a Tropical Board?

For some reason or another members joining the to discuss tropical weather aren't checking out the other forums on the board.
This is the reason why the Greetings & Stats forum isn't getting attention. There have been an increase in members using that
forum first upon joining, however... it's is because of the vast increase in membership in the last six to eight weeks.

Miss Mary wrote:Tom - oh, duh!!! Silly me..... but I have read other posts about Storm2K being a 'tropical board' only. Which kinda annoys me, to be honest. Sure it's what brought about Storm2K but we discuss other wx events also.
Absolutely right, Mary! I remember an attempt at letting members know that other types of weather is discussed here (even letting them know about the off topic forum), but for some reason they apparently forgot about the fine folks here.

Those that joined last August and September didn't visit the site much if at all when the tropical cyclone threat decreased and ended. Then it was back to the core members throughout the winter and spring.
Hopefully those that joined and have posted regularly since July 31st and as Charley and Frances were approaching will continue to check in and participate through the months ahead.

It is true that some members tend to pay little attention to the other topics, and I am one of them. I do not do that intentionally, but I go to college and have kids and work, I was drawn to the tropical weather forum, but when the semseter gets busy, and the holidays roll around it gets difficult to make time. Sorry for the long and somewhat pointless seeming post, but I wanted to let you know that the entire site is appreiated even if some of us disappear from time to time.
