About three years ago I had a neighbor named Pat. She had been a great neighbor for ten years. No problems and always friendly. Then one day the Sheriff's Dept. comes by the house with a subpeona for my then 13 year old son and myself because he was a minor. Turns out she was suing my son for pornography!! I work in the courthouse and looked at the affidavit that was signed. She said that my son had taken nude photos of her! I was stunned because I know my son would not do this.
We get to court and I noticed we were at the back of the docket. When she addressed the judge she had a piece of aluminum foil with holes in it. She told the judge that we were aliens and spying on her and that we sent tiny lightbeams through her window that penetrated the foil. We were also sending signals through her TV and our newly installed security lights had hidden cameras in it and we were taking pictures of her. The second floor of my home was used as a "control room" and that we contacted Channel 13 news about a "space ship landing in our yard." Prior to this I noticed she would be in her yard looking up into the sky with a mirror and talking to somebody.
By this time, the judge had shed his robe. The court clerk had to leave the room and the baliff had her head buried in her lap so she would not reveal to Pat she was laughing! The judge dismissed my son and I. Pat was ordered to a mental institution.
I had no idea she had turned mentally ill. If I had known I would have surely helped her if I could have.

Not so hilarious to me; my very best friend for 20 years, in college and afterward, became increasingly involved in Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" version of the future..so much so, that she committed suicide two years ago, believing that alien entities were sending signals via church bells, and she no longer wanted to live, facing "certain invasion".
Even more "sick" was the fact that her husband took her ashes to a "Trekkie" convention, where a "Klingon funeral" was held over them.
She was only 40, and left behind a lovely 5-year-old daughter.

hmmmm..that rivals my Grandmother calling my Mom and insisting she do something about the local TV station. She said that Phil Donahue was looking up her dress and he was probably going to rape her because he knew where she lived!!
PS....just as a note. It is a well documented fact that every 13 year old boy has him a hidden stash of stuff.

Truly bizarre, on both situtions (Linda's neighbor and Bill's friend). Some people seem to need to cling to beliefs like this or join cults. Not that I'm extremely "nomal" but I'd like to think I have good common sense. I guess we need to be more sensitive to those that stray a bit too far and try to get them help. That's very sad about your friend Bill.
We have many topics going but this one is totally new! Can't top either story. I have odd neighbors but they pale in comparison - just annoying is all. LOL

streetsoldier... the hilarious part of all this is the mere fact that the Sheriff's Dept. would even allow this to happen. She gave us no sign she was mentally ill until the very day of court. I mean WE DID think we were being sued for pornography!! Her brother is a Supervisor of my county and he had no clue either!!
I was not trying to pinpoint her mental illness as being hilarious. I also stressed at the end of the story that "if I had known she was mentally ill, I would have tried to get help for her" She is a good lady and is recovering. Alot of it was due to stress of being without work and other things. Some people react differently to stress. In her case, she suffered a mental breakdown. When she does come back home, I am going to make it a point to get closer to her and be there alot more.

I met this young lady when she was but 18, just out of high school...I was 26, and we were both beginning our college studies. We became lovers...there was talk of marriage...but after I became disabled, and she lost her father, our then-five-year relationship changed into a very close friendship.
Up or down, thin or flush, in 22 years we were "there" for each other...she even took our wedding pictures, and stood as godmother to "firehead". She was very involved in women's abuse services; she would meet abused women late at night, at restaurants, and spirit them to a shelter. During this time, I advised her to obtain a fitted bulletproof vest...and in the purchase of a handgun with which to defend herself from irate husbands/boyfriends of these women, should they follow them.
It was this gun...a Walther PPK...that she used to take her life. She also transferred her PC's address book to her watch, then deleted the address book from her computer. Her husband didn't know how to make contact with anyone until the police returned her effects, a month later.
In all that time, I was unaware of the "hidden" world in which she lived...and I miss her. She was the last of the "old guard" of friends I once enjoyed, and the closest. Just as a point of reference, actress Trini Alvarado ("Times Square", "Little Women", other movies) could have been her twin.
And that, Lindaloo, is the rest of the story.
