...after five tropical cyclones this year, try Japan. 8 tropical cyclones so far (a record) with another on it's way.

Meet Tropical Storm Ma-on (forecast to become a typhoon)

IT kinda makes one think about these teleconnections that Mr.Bastardi talks about...that is supposedly when storms strike Japan then that favors a pattern of US landfalls. I am sure this is a GROSS simplification, but it is 6:15 AM...if you want hard science, pick up a copy of Popular Science.

IMO, if we were use to hurricanes, it would be much easier to handle.
Four canes, within 6 weeks when we aren't use to it is pretty tuff.

Japan sure had it bad but I think they are use to them a lot more ten we are here in Florida.

The great thing I can say is I know what to expect and how to prepare for the next one - should one come.

senorpepr,

The graphic is your post links to :
https://metoc.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/warnings/wp2604.gif

which is causing a security error for any computer that has debugging turned on (like mine). THe graphics on this page shouldn't be linking to SSL secured web pages (i.e., https).

Just FYI that is was causing problems...

yes, they're getting slammed this season.
But...they are better prepared than we WERE.
I'm sure things will be "old hat" here, like there, during our newest multi-decadal cycle.

Japan gets hit all the time. Even in super typhoons very few people die. They are very well prepared, and their buildings are earthquake proof so they should be hurricane proof as well. So in all due respect we did get harder than they did. They had little to no damage.

Well, prepared as they may be, the facts say they still took a pretty good hit - damage wise and death wise:

Why do they call TS's Typhoons over there?? If you want to count TS's as well, the US has been hit by 9 tropical systems: Alex,Bonnie,Charley,Frances,Gaston,Hermine,Ivan,Ivan 2nd, and Jeanne.

Just doing some research on Japan's cyclones this year. Most of them hit at TD or TS strength, but killed many more than what happened here in the states. I'm not sure about damages. The thing to remember is the most of Japan is not typhoon-proof like most are saying. That may be the case for the larger cities, but the smaller villages have a huge impact from typhoons. Mudslides are also a problem.

Conson, Dianmu, Matheun, Malow, Megi, Chaba, Songda, and Meari have it so far this year. A tally of deaths from Japan alone are Dianmu: 5; Megi: 13; Chaba: 9; Songda: 20; and Meari: 18. That doesn't include those who lose their life in the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan.

Also... with 8 cyclones hitting them this year, this breaks the record of 6 set in 1990. The season isn't over yet with another strike coming soon.

As for being prepared... they're not as prepared as we are. Outside of the cities, news coveraga is nowhere near as good as it is in the states.
