Slumbertank is no more

#1 Postby HurricaneGirl » Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:22 am

I just wanted to give an update on what's been happening with our band and why I haven't been here so much lately.

We lost our practice space back in August but I am happy to report that we just moved our equipment into our new space over the last week and had our first real practice there on Sunday. It felt so good to play after all that time.

It's not as spacious as our other one but it is on the ground floor which will make it much easier to move our stuff when we have gigs. We also don't have to worry about losing this one either. We can have it as long as we want.

We also changed our name from Slumbertank to Alien Luv Dolls. Since we are playing cover tunes and not originals, we wanted to go with something catchier to attract more people. We already have 2 clubs that want to book us as soon as we are ready.

We are upgrading our lighting system. I will be the one working them onstage with pedals. As soon as we get them and I am comfortable using them we are going to start playing out. We are also working on a few more songs to add to our list as well.

It's taken a long time but we are very well rehearsed and will put on a really good show. I am so ready to perform I can't wait!! :D

Thanks Alicia!! We currently do not have any live recordings or MP3's online. Rich hasn't brought the computer to the practice room for us to record yet. We tried to record some in our old place but we never got anything we were happy with. We're too picky I guess.

We will be working on our new website soon. Rich, one of our guitar players, is going to secure the name with register.com today. He is great at building websites.

We also need to take some new band photos to include Larry our new guitar player. We have alot of work ahead of us but it will be fun. :)

I'm so excited for you!! Really!

I was in a band in high school. Good grief, that was a LONG time ago. We played Moody Blues and stuff like that. My mother went through these wailing, whining hissy fits every time I went to practice. She was convinced that my foray into jazz started it all. (I was a classically trained clarinetist...) She was sure I was going to become a drunk or a dope fiend of some kind....(Neither happened... )

So good luck with your dream and have fun with it! When it isnt fun anymore, then quit.

I see you were a clarinet player.... What instrument did you play in the band Alicia? I know a girl who is also a classically trained clarinetist and she plays a mean bass guitar. She replaced me in my old band Too Many Shoes.

I played all winds in the group. (Like the flute solo in Nights in White Satin), did a mean bassoon piece in Jazzman. Not at all talented with string instruments except for my newly acquired lap harp! Neatest thing I ever saw!

Hey Donna!! :D It's good to hear from you.. I will definately let you all know when we get our website going. It will take some time but it should be ready when we start gigging. Now that we've all agreed on our new name we are going to get business cards and promo packs ready too.

This is an exciting time for us because we've really worked hard on getting our songs tight and working on our stage presence. I have also been collecting "gig clothes" so I'll have lots of kewll outfits to wear on stage.

All of our hard work will be rewarding when we get out there and show this town how much WE ROCK!! :D

P.S. I have been so busy at work and in the evenings that I haven't had time to play Weather Jeopardy.

After I get all the panel schedules done and we start transferring people to other jobs, I'll have more free time during the day to play. I'm thinking after hurricane season will be a good time to start up the competitions again.

OMG! I want one of those harps so bad!! Those are so kewl.. Once I was at the music store and I played Somewhere Over the Rainbow on one. My husband couldn't believe I just picked it up and knew how to play it!

Thats a great name ....Alien Luv Dolls..... I love it!

You ladies are making me jealous :( I always wanted to be in a band, but never had the time or patience to learn an instrument. When I was in high school I worked at a concert hall setting up and promoting indie/punk shows (mostly bands that y'all wouldnt know, but we did set up Blink 182, Less Than Jake, Dashboard Confessional etc).

Mary, LOL, good luck with the band! I mean, we
all seemed attached to Slumbertank, but, you
gotta move with the times, eh? You got me to
thinking about when I used to play bass...I still
have the old Peavey TNT 100 amp that we all
crowned "The Mother", because it took at least
two people to tote it! Let's see...we threatened
to drop it from balconies, throw it in front of
oncoming cars, etc....and, know what? I still
have the darned peice of chunk...growing dust
in an extra bedroom closet! It was used at many
a block party, benefit concert, and stage show.
Peice of heavy crap...LOL...I still have it! I look
at the old thing and smile at the memories!

You keep on playing and loving what you do!
I'm behind whatever you do!

I really like Slumbertank better myself and I still wish it was our name. In this case it was 4 against 1. I still own the rights to the name but those guys just didn't want to use it. They thought if we were an original band trying to make it big it would be better. Since we are just about having fun and doing covers, they wanted something that would attract more attention on a marquee.

Thanks breeze, stormie and Garrett for your well wishes. \

Breeze that's funny about your bass rig. Believe it or not I have gone through 3 bass rigs and I still have them all. Although I did give one of my 4 -10 Oversize Bullfrog cabinets (the one with wheels on it) to Rich because I was going to throw it in the dumpster when we moved. (not by myself of course)  It buzzes really bad but I think it can be fixed.

I bought a new 500 watt Hartke system in August and I absolutely love it.. It has 2 - 16's in it and it sounds better than anything I've ever played through.

I still do guest stints with "the Cool" here in the Charleston area, generally only on Saturdays since I'm working some hellaciously long hours (11 hours today, 47 hours with tomorrow to go) ... here and there, I'll peg some notes on some lyrics, but not much lately with just way too much going on...

I would LOVE to be able to some original material and write some .. unforgetable lyrics, which a couple of IDEAS have come about recently, and I'm working on one tentatively entitled "Only in Dreams" ... the lyrics definitely are written in the 1st person, with losing my first true love back in the summer of 1990.

The other idea is a much darker set involving a re-occurring nightmare I had in my youth ... involving being locked inside either a school or hospital (can't remember since the dream seemed to shift back and forth, but it was evidently clear that there was a mausoleum inside, and the dead did NOT rest peacefully ...
