Pop-Up Blocker

#1 Postby southerngale » Wed Oct 06, 2004 1:55 am

I need a good pop-up blocker, preferably a free one but I'm not opposed to paying a little for one if it's worth it. I hate pop-ups and they keep showing up when I run Ad-aware as well. I've tried a few different "popular" ones from download.com but one kept making my computer crash and the one I've got now is annoying to operate, a lot of wanted pics and images show up as x's and it won't let me open my Excite email.

Do you have one and if you do, are you satisfied with it? I need some recommendations please. I use Internet Explorer.

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2? If you have Service Pack 2, Internet Explorer comes with a built in pop up blocker just so you know. :)

If not, you can use one like this one, which is one of my personal favorites TBH. :)

I have been quite happy so far with Service Pack 2. So far it's doing a great job.

I would first check Add/Remove programs and remove anthing suspicious or without details..especially internet or web related..Bullseye Network will cause freezing alrighty..

Uninstall any popup and adware removal software..

Delete Temp files in the multiple Temp folders including the IE cache..

Do a System Restore..

Update Antivirus and Scan for viruses..Norton 2005 is available..

Install SP2..enable the firewall..

Install only the popular Adware and scan..

There have been a few cases where wiping the hard drive and restoring the system with the PC makers CD is required..

Good News..

Service Pack 2 messed with Java somehow. Anyone know why?

Thanks for the tips Aquawind. I just went in and deleted a whole bunch of crap. Toolbars and junk(including Bullseye network). My computer's been running quite a bit better in the last few weeks, but it's still not perfect(although most of the time it's OK).

Get the Google toolbar. I have it and it comes with a really good popup blocker. Plus I would trust Google more than most companies when installing something like that.

I use a combination of SP2 and Stopzilla and I am pleased with both. I would also look at using a spyware/adware blocker as well.

Thanks for the responses. My new (9 months old now) computer came with Windows 98 SE.

Aquawind, why uninstall popup and adware removal software?

I have a good virus scan and firewall.

I only mention removing your current blockers/cleaners because I do this stuff everyday and it seems like 9 out of 10 times people have old versions, trials ran out, they are not updated...etc..

Removing and downloading the new and popular programs will ensure they are updated and the latest versions. Trials that run out and/or don't clean the problems in the first place are suspect themselves..expecially if they are part of the startup process..

Win98SE was pretty good stuff..but wayyy outdated..I would suggest something like ZoneAlarm for a firewall in win98..true hardware firewalls are to complicated for most users to configure properly..besides it's free..
