Just took in a storm kitty

#1 Postby Agua » Wed Oct 06, 2004 2:00 pm

Not that it makes a flip, but relief workers from the Mississippi Gulf Coast came back yesterday from Pennsacola with a nice cat whose owners lost their home and asked that the kitty be given a new home because they couldn't take care of him. He supposedly came from a home with two dogs, so I'm hoping he eventually gets along with my two Cairns and Cocker Spaniel.

He's a very friendly cat and doesn't appear to be suffering from any freaky behavior or anything. I've always said that you can't go out looking for a good cat, they have to find you. I guess this sort of qualifies.

Fantastic Linda! I'll give it a week and see if they can tolerate each other. I should have a pretty good idea as to whether they'll be able to get along by that time.

He really is a very friendly cat.

Yes, the first week is always critical. Hopefully, your new kitty's shot records came with him/her. Do you know how old he/she is? If an older cat, sometimes they go through depression because of missing their owner. Took in a Corgi whose owner died. The lady was elderly when she passed and had "Honey" for 9 years. It was trying, but she survived it and is happy. Even her vet said he has never seen Honey skip before. lol. You have a good heart Agua. Keep me posted.

Re: records - Don't know yet. Just got more information. What happened was the people in Pennsacola had friends in Biloxi. The friends had carried stuff down to the owners and the owners asked them to take the cat with them and find a home for him. The Biloxi people lived in an apartment that doesn't allow pets and somehow he ended up at Bienville Animal Clinic in OS (couldn't figure out how he got the Bienville vaccination tag).

Anyway, he's two years old and his name is "Lil' man" (kind of a crappy name, but if it makes him feel more comfortable, I guess I can live with it). Wife said he was rolling around (playing) on the kitchen floor, but that one of the Carins chased him up our stairs. When I called she said he'd come about halfway down the stairs and was just sitting there looking.

We'll see.

Sounds like he is fitting in well. If he has been around dogs he should adjust okay. Cats are like that, he is feeling the dogs out. That is why he was sitting on the stairs looking. lol. Once he figures out the dogs will not harm him get ready for some aggravation. hehe. "Lil Man" is cute.

As for Bienville, they probably went ahead and gave him his shots. Or at least a booster and a rabies. Which is okay. I do not use Bienville because of a bad experience. Value my animals too much.

What happened at Bienville Linda? We used to use Dr. Hastings, but, you know how vets are: they'll have you getting $300/month worth of vet services/medication if you do everything they say. :P

So nice of you to do that. We had a wild kitty adopt us just before Charley hit. Brought him into the house that morning (after being to the vet) and found him later in the day under the covers with his head on a pillow. Not bad for a cat a day out of the wild.
On another note I often think about how many pets are effected by these storm. A cat of ours suffered a heart attack just as Jeanne was making landfall. He passed away while the storm was over the Lake. Barometric pressure was to blame according to our vet. Too much stress. He was only 6. We lost our first when Floyd hit in a similar situation. We have now set up measures to prevent this with our other cats.
We need to remember our furry and feathered friends when they lose their homes and suffer just as we do.

They misdiagnosed my Pomeranian which resulted in her death. Had they diagnosed her correctly she would have survived. Trust me, they ALL know who I am. I even saw the lady that misdiagnosed her this past weekend. She was fired and now works at the library. She could not even look me in the eyes. Maybe it was best she didn't. Funny seeing her too this weekend out of all weekends. Oct 3rd (Sunday) was one year that I lost Roxie.

I use the vet in Escatawpa now. He is not about the money. He has a genuine love for animals. Never thought I would find another one of those after losing Dr. Delmas.

Your vet is correct. Cats and dogs can't take the pressure drop. It is always good to have sedatives on hand. Sorry to hear of your losses.

And welcome to S2K. :D

I love it Agua! Great job and I love the name as well. I've had a few strays adopt me over the years as well. It does sound like "Lil man" is interested in the Cairn - definately not afraid of him. I'll bet that they will be best friends soon!

Lindaloo - I remember what happened with your poor dog. It's a small world that the doctor is from the same place.

Bless you Aqua for taking the stray cat in. What you'll receive in return will be well worth it. I grew up Cairn's (my mom was born and raised in Scotland) and we also had cats (I'm such a cat lover). Let's just say the Cairn's wanted to be in control but the cats were always in charge! There was a clear line drawn in the sand, so to speak. And the Cairns knew it.

Linda, I can't believe it's been a year since you lost sweet Roxie. My heart goes out to you. Our dog Hope is a full fledged family member, it will break my heart the day she passes on. So I can well understand your grief. Hugs going out to you.

Here in Houston we have had over 500 dogs and cats(I think mostly dogs)come in to our local SPCA and other shelters from the Caymans and Jamaica and I think Florida too. I hope many will find a good home here. Houstonians always seem to have big hearts.
