Just a question
After reading several articles and discussing this issue with my peers, I have a question I would like to propose to you all...just to get your thoughts. It is not meant in a rude, malicious way so don't go there.
Are you against criticism of the President strictly because we are in war?
Just a question that I am interested to hear thoughts on.

I have been known to critize a President or two in my day and see nothing wrong with it as long as it is done with respect for the Office of the President. Usually it is the policies or programs that I have a problem with not the man. President Clinton being the most recent example. I disagreed with a lot of his policies but absolutely abhorred the shame he brought on the office that he held.
During a time of war however, special rules always apply. When the President has made the decision to commit our troops, then the time for debate on that subject is over until they're home. Domestic issues are another thing though. As far as I'm concerned they're still fair game!

In wartime, criticism of a sitting President can, and will be used against him (and, by entension, our entire country and its efforts) by our enemies abroad (and some of our erstwhile "friends" as well); in an era of instantaneous disclosure, mass communications uber alles, it is VERY important for the people, entertainers, the Congress and Senate, etc. to present a UNITED FRONT in external matters. Failure to do this, especially insofar as Arabic countries, will be be perceived as "weakness"...and exploited.

Couldn't disagree more JQ! When we're at war the decision has already been made. That's what he gets paid for. Indecision during war is what gets people killed. Just look at the Vietnam War as a prime example. We couldn't decide whether we wanted to wage war or not. As a result a lot of good boys got kiled needlessly. The time for discussion is before the war starts. Once it starts it's time to kick ass. Hopefully we won't make that kind of mistake again in my lifetime!
