What was the "Storm of the year" SO FAR? I say Hurricane Charley.

I would say depends on where you live. For me I broke my foot and got looted with frances. I had way much more damage with jeanne plus jeanne killed many. Charley was devastating for alot of people and don't forget Ivan was a cat 5.

Without any doubt Ivan was the storm of the year IMO because of many things that happened with it.For example Ivan formed around 8.0n into a hurricane and then turned into a cat 4 hurricane south of 10n the first time that occurs ever in the atlantic.Second Ivan mantained as a major cane while passing thru the windward islands and more than that keeping it's major cane intensity thru the so called graveyard for tropical systems in the eastern caribbean sea.And it passed very close to the north coast of South America with that intensity.Hurricane watches and warnings were issued for places where they normally dont issue those such as the ABC islands,the north coast of Venezuela and the northern Colombian coast.Ivan caused 93 deaths in the caribbean and over 20 deaths when it made landfall in the gulf coast.Because of those reasons I say Ivan was the most important system of the year.

I saw Charley was the most significant on US soil.

the damage of Port Charlotte where everything was literally obliterated. Those images reminded me so much of Andrew. No other US storm this year had images like that.

Ivan was the worst of the Caribbean layed waste to the entire Island of Grenada and nearby islands. Maintained Major Hurricane status for 10 days. reached category 5 on 3 occassions. is #2 of all time in hrs as Category 5.

Charley is my pick but not by much.

It is so hard to split these two. IMHO there is no definate Storm of the year. It all comes down to opinion.

Charley can be called the storm of the year because it was the worst of the hurricanes to affect the United States.

Ivan can be called the storm of the year because of its track of devastation throughout the Caribbean and ultimately the US.

Jeanne can be called the storm of the year because it left thousands of people dead in Haiti.

I don't think there is A storm of the year.

very close between charley and ivan

had charley moved through cuba just 10 miles to the east, havana would have been leveled. havana is unable to withstand a cat 3, which charley was in cuba. also, charley affected the entire US east coast

ivan brought a long trail oif destruction as well.

I'd give it a tie between the two. had ivan not have collapsed before landfall then it would have went to ivan

In a "normal" year any one of these storms would have been "storms of the year."

Then again, this isn't a "normal" year.

Ivan, mainly because it was a Cat 5 3 times, and when it actually did hit land it was so much larger than Charley, but Charley was more devastating in the U.S., but to a very small area.

I also vote Ivan because that was the worst one here. Lost power for 20 hours and had a ton of tree damage. Frances brought some gusty winds, but nothing terrible and Jeanne just brought some rain. Charley didn't affect us at all.

I say Ivan and Charley, but Frances and Jeanne had the potential to be much worse than the two. Dry air saved the EC of Florida twice. Jeanne and Frances both would have been more than 145 mph at landfall, in the same location. Palm Beach County to Brevard would be devastated.

For intensity-first being the longest lived consecutive major hurricane and also reaching CAT 5 at LEAST 3 separate times, and meteorological reasons, Ivan is my winner for Storm of 2004 ...

However, 2004 is one of the worst seasons that I've witnessed in my 32 years of existance ... each storm with the human impact could easily qualify for the storm of the year ...

Charley's intensification to a CAT 4 before landfall at Charlotte Harbor and it's trek across Central Florida ... re-emerging off the coast and affecting the coastal plains along the Eastern Seaboard ...

Frances' impact upon Central Florida/Western Florida and far-reaching inland impacts with very heavy rains, and a record-setting 117 tornadoes, including 47 tornadoes in South Carolina alone...

Ivan's trek across the Caribbean, basically levelling several islands, and ultimately coming ashore with strong impacts from Mobile eastward into the Florida Panhandle and then points well inland with strong winds, heavy rainfall,and more tornadoes ...

Jeanne's devastation in Hispanola with several thousand deaths in Haiti alone, and coming ashore in Central Florida yet again, almost in the exact same location as Frances 6 weeks prior ...

I voted Ivan again, ONLY for meteorological reasons ... b/c all four storms each qualify for the storm of the year ... and the 2004 season will be remembered for many years to come ...

I voted for Jeanne. Loss of human life is the most important factor for me.
