There's still a shot you know...

Hmmmm.......

August had 8 storms

September had 4 storms

Maybe that means October will have 2 storms and November will have 1 storm.

We may have Otto if that Non-Tropical Low out by the Azores gets tropical criteria (Looking mostly doubtful)

Other than that, yes probably so because the conditions have been so ripe this year. The Gulf still has a shot (Evidenced by the shear development of Matthew) And Near The Bahamas and Northward toward Bermuda.

Also keep in mind, it is not out of the question for a tropical system to develop even out of season.

IMO the odds of another landfalling major hurricane in the U.S. is decreasing.....the latest of record was the October 25th, 1921 Tampa Bay cat-3, and the model guidance doesn't suggest anything spectacular developing in the western Caribbean anytime soon. Of course, cat-2 hurricanes have impacted the U.S. as late as mid-November ("Kate" in 1985) and cat-1's as late as early December (1925).

For folks in the Caribbean, there's still time for a massive hurricane in that area....recent memories of monster Mitch near Halloween and powerful Lenny in November should warrant continued vigilance in that area.

Agreed. Nature has pulled out alot of stops this season, so a weary eye (And they have to be extremely weary by now) to the sky is definately in order.

If we're not done...we're just about there. Fall pattern has set in...I'd be surprised to see anyone threatened for the remainder of this year outside of Florida...much, much cooler air is moving into the New Orleans area by this weekend with our first shot at the low 40's for the Northshore and low to mid 50's for the City...with these kinds of temps moving in, I'd be surprised to see anything tropical again, unless there is a quick pattern change that remainds stagnant for some time...

One possibly in the GOM this week; western Caribbean could produce a major before October is done. Otherwise no more threats to the CONUS.

I think that the Carribean is the only shot left for
2004 - the GOM is getting more hostile and
with the cooler weather, the water temps will
fall off too.

And folks here in the Panhandle remember Hurricane Kate in 1985. kate was a Cat 2 storm that hit east of Panama City I believe around Nov. 11. 1985 was very active, seems like Juan finally moved ashore around Pensacola in late Oct. As unpredictable as this season has been, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see a couple more curve balls thrown our way.

With cooler weather moving in, I agree that most of GOM is closed to action going forward. I think there is potential for a storm or two in the Caribbean but will not affect the US mainland. Also, perhaps a fish in the Atlantic to round out the season. But I think cooler temps/high pressure will protect the US the rest of the year. We are certainly ready for the relief!

I think we get one or two more out of the western Caribbean. The pattern suggests to me that something could brew there as early as this coming weekend, but more probably late next week.

Lets not forget about CAT 4 Michelle in 2001 which coincidentally was the last big Oct-Nov hurricane that occured in the Caribbean.Along with the majors Mitch & Lenny that were previously mentioned in this thread, there also was Kate in Nov 85 which took an east-west track through the straights of Fla. & then struck the Panhandle..Gordon 94 was another Nov ts/cane which affected Fla.Last year there were some development in early Dec.Stalled out frontal boundaries in the Caribbean are often the culprits that lead to tropical development late in the season & if the steering currents are just right these TC's can move up into Southern Fla.Last century plenty of hurricanes some strong & some weak affected Fla in Oct & Nov..After the types of events that have taken place this season from 2 hurricanes making landfall in the same place only weeks apart to the most northern & southern developing strong hurricanes on record I would never say never when mother nature wants to rule with an iron fist..

Edited to say that "Kate" was also mentioned.

Considering how many people are without roofs in Florida right now it wouldn't take a "major" storm to do a lot of damage or cause a lot of heartbreak in Florida. I'm no expert but isn't this a historically busy time for GOM storms? Even a wimpy TS that drops six inches of rain with no wind damage would be disastrous in Pensacola.

I hope to God that there are no more tropical systems, be they depressions, tropical storms or hurricanes, in the GOM, Caribbean or tropical Atlantic for the rest of this year.

Please God, the people in Florida are crying out for a break. We don't need any more hurricanes this season.

Please, no more, for the rest of 2004.
