Freakin Insurance

#1 Postby PTPatrick » Thu Oct 14, 2004 6:32 am

I am annoyed for my dad...the other day the adjuster came out and got my dad's hopes up. He told my dad that they would give him enough money for a new roof, and some to fix the insulation that blew out from under our house(up on stilts). And he gave a little money for damaged siding...you know what my dad got...$189! They gave him $1300 and then reduced it because of decpreciation or something. What a freakin rip off.

You might want to check to see if once he makes the repairs if they will give him the balance. Some insurance companies do this.

If you don't carry "replacement" on your insurance policy, it will depreicate whatever needs to be replaced but this seems absolutely absurd. I would think your dad needs to contact the insurance company and find out what his options are and explain to them just what #s were given to him. This is unacceptable. The insurance companies are going to try to get out as cheap as possible and the customers need to fight them for everything they are worth. I know it's easier said than done but this is why homeowners pay such huge premiums to begin with.

You might not want to accept the claim........now your dad will have a claim and we most likely be cancelled.

That is normally used with replacement cost insurance. Depreciation is always used, but with replacement cost insurance one normally gets the balance after the repairs are completed.

There was an article about free legal advice available to victims of Ivan. I'm not sure which storm affected your father but it may be worth checking in to see what if anything like that is in his community.

Maybe this will be of some help to your father or others who are having trouble with insurance adjusters.

I would call my insurance compay and demand a different adjuster and a new damage estimate. If it still seems way low then I would consider contacting a lawyer. Remember, the adjuster works for the insurance company and has their best interest in mind......MGC

The policies can be confusing. Sometimes they'll send some money like they did there AND still pay for the repair when the bill comes in. The contractor sends the insurance company the bill. I'd check that out because they can be very unclear and confusing in how they pay-out...

45 days later and I STILL haven't seen Allstate yet. The FEMA process is going along but it too is slow. All of my repairs have come out of my pocket so far. $6,000 so far and counting. Talk about frustrated.....

We just got an adjuster here for our water damage from Jeanne.
Told us that because we kept it clean and that we didn't have an actual hole you could see through...the water was wind-driven into cracks in our outside concrete block wall. they won't pay to replace the damaged bookcases or carpet.. replacement insurance for the bookcase isn't invoked because the water was wind-driven. The carpet can be cleaned because there's no mud or major mold (because we dried it)
And the cracks can be caulked, instead of removing the drywall/stucco and actually sealing the block wall.
He said we may not even make the 2% deductable of nearly $3K!!!
This sucks.. oh but he had to measure the entire roof because we lost 4 shingles.
We lost 20 and replaced them carefully after Charley and filed no claim!
UGH!!!!

Good Grief guys! I feel so sorry for you all.
Please cross your fingers for me, our adjuster comes tomorrow, Weve made a list of stuff that was damaged when the ceiling caved in, but you know what I just want to get the darn roof fixed, I am not a confrontational person and we will have a bookcase and dresser to throw out (these were secondhand and over 20 yrs old) so I really dont want to bicker over material stuff.

Just fix my roof and I will be a happy camper, actually my worst fear is that they give us enough and then drop us like a hot potatoe.

MGC is right, it was even said on TV here in SW FL after Charley. They said you have the right to request a new adjuster to come.

I would call the Ins. and make that request. It doesn't sound right what they told you and the little money they sent. Did you have a high deductible? that could be the reason.

Still request another adjuster to come see the damages.

The majority of homeowners policies have building losses settled on a replacement cost basis as long as they are insured to the correct value. It is NOT guarantee replacement cost though and will not go over the coverage amount.

supposedly they will give us 1300 AFTER the repairs are made...however, the new roof will likely cost 3000+, the insulation we can do for a few hundred...the siding and gutters(which were brand new) sustained a few hundred in damages as well. So I would estimate we had over 4000 in damage. What do we even have insurance for. I mean my dad has been paying these people 150 bucks a month...and they give us 189 and tell us to fix the stuff ourselves and then we get a little more? Kiss my shiny white tail insurance companies.

I'm estimating 6K in repairs/replacement of stuff.
deductable approaching 3K..lucky if we get 1K from the insurance company. At least that's the way it sounded from our adjuster, today.

I guess after Andrew (and now these storms) I should be happy we have ANY insurance at all.
